Martinique vs United States live streaming: Preview
Can this experimental U.S. side make it two wins out of two at the 2021 Gold Cup?
On Sunday night, the United States took on Haiti in Kansas City and got off to a winning start.
Left-back Sam Vines with the only goal of the game, heading in at the back post just nine minute in.
Nicholas Gioacchini came the closest to doubling the Stars and Stripes’ lead, hitting the upright in the 66th minute.
Having won their opening game, the U.S. are in a strong position to advance to the next round.
Remember, Gregg Berhalter has named a mainly domestic-based roster for this Gold Cup, in order to give his star names a rest ahead of World Cup Qualifying, commencing in September.
Captain Sebastian Lletget, of LA Galaxy, was a strong performer on Sunday, cementing his case to be involved in these upcoming qualifiers.
Another positive was Gianluca Busio’s debut off the bench; every touch was cheered by the home fans, given that he plays for Sporting Kansas City.
The negative though was Paul Arriola’s injury, he hobbled off after 14 minutes, and this is particularly bad due to the lack of winger depth in this squad.
Will this somewhat mix and match United States side make it six points out of six and book their place in the knockout rounds?
Martinique meanwhile are likely to be Group B’s whipping boys but, in spite of this, got off to the perfect start in their group opener.
Les Matinino led after just ten minutes against Canada at the weekend; a defensive malfunction allowing Emmanuel Rivière to score his second international goal.
However, the Canadians rallied and eventually ran out comfortable 4-1 winners.
Martinique did incredibly well to qualify automatically for the Gold Cup via the Nations League, doing so at the expense of Trinidad & Tobago.
This is the seventh time they’ve qualified for the Gold Cup but they last got out of the group phase in 2002.
They’ll do well to add to their four wins from 18 matches in this one as the U.S. should comfortably win at Children’s Mercy Park.
Prediction: Martinique 0-3 United States
These two have only ever met twice before, both at Gold Cups.
The U.S. won 2-0 in Massachusetts in 2003 before they won again, this time 3-2 in Tampa, four years ago.
Daryl Dike will be looking to score his first competitive goal for the U.S. after scoring in a friendly with Costa Rica last month.
