Liverpool are back in action, needing to close the gap on those above them.

Last weekend, the Reds were due to face fierce rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford but that match was postponed due to fan protests outside and in the stadium.

The two clubs will now try again on Thursday with Liverpool finishing the season with fixtures against West Brom, Burnley and Crystal Palace after that.

These will be crucial fixtures for Jürgen Klopp’s side given their current predicament.

The Reds’ last two games that did take place both finished 1-1 with the opposition snatching late equalisers, namely Leeds and Newcastle.

So, Liverpool are seventh, two points behind Spurs, four adrift of West Ham and seven behind Chelsea in fourth, with a game in hand over all of them.

Thus, if they are to storm into the top four, they need to claim maximum points from their remaining games.

Given their recent run, Southampton could be welcome opponents.

In the Saints’ last game, they battled to a 1-1 draw with Leicester at St Mary’s.

They played for 80 minutes with ten men after Jannik Vestergaard was sent off and James Ward-Prowse’s penalty actually gave them the lead but 1-1 it finished.

However, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side have been sinking down the table in 2021.

They’ve won just three times this calendar year and since the first of those, the 1-0 win over Liverpool on 4 January, they’ve sunk from sixth to 15th.

Liverpool though have already lost home games to Burnley, Brighton, Everton and Fulham this year.

Will there be another shock away win at Anfield?

Prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Southampton

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last six Premier League home matches against Southampton, winning the last three by scoring ten and conceding zero.

Mohamed Salah has scored seven in seven against Southampton in the Premier League.

Although, Southampton are looking to complete the Premier League double over Liverpool for the first time since 2003/04.
