Hungary get their their Euro 2020 campaign underway when they take on current holders European champions Portugal at Budapest’s Puskas Arena on Tuesday.
Marco Rossi’s men, who are unbeaten in their last 11 matches in all competitions, defeated Bulgaria in the play-off semi-finals and then Iceland in the subsequent final, to book their place in the tournament proper.
The Magyars drew 0-0 with the Republic of Ireland last Tuesday in their final warm-up friendly, and will have to be at their best to take anything from the game.
RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai and Zsolt Kalmar of Slovak Super Liga club DAC Dunajska Streda are both ruled out of the competition through injury. Skipper Adam Szalai will provide an attacking threat from midfield, and he is likely to be joined by Freiburg’s Roland Sallai.
Portugal, managed by Fernando Santos, are looking to win their second consecutive tournament, having beaten France 1-0 in extra-time back in 2016.
Santos’s side, who are six-matches unbeaten, finished qualifying with 17 points, three behind Group B winners Ukraine. A Selecao go into Tuesday’s clash full of confidence having defeated Israel 4-0 last Wednesday.
Joao Cancelo misses out having tested positive for Covid-19, so Nelson Semedo could start at right-back.
