Haiti vs Canada live streaming: Preview
Despite a terrible start, Canada began their Gold Cup campaign with a victory on Sunday.
On Sunday evening, in Kansas City, Canada faced Group B minnows Martinique on matchday one but got off to the worst possible start.
A mix up at the back, involving Mark-Anthony Kaye and Steven Vitória, presented the underdogs with a golden chance which they took ten minutes in.
However, Canada weren’t behind for long, just six minutes in fact; Cyle Larin heading home from a corner to make it 1-1.
Then, just four minutes after that, neat work by Tajon Buchanan down the left resulted in him squaring the ball across, presenting Jonathan Osorio with an easy tap-in.
Stephen Eustáquio made it 3-1 before the half hour mark and then, late in the game, Theo Corbeanu made it four, scoring from close-range after a cross by Lucas Cavallini.
So, in the face of an early scare, John Herdman’s side fought back and enjoyed a resounding 4-1 victory.
The Canucks are the only side, apart from Mexico or the US, to win the Gold Cup (since 1989) but have gone out in the quarter-finals of the last two editions.
Even without their two superstar players, Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David, there is optimism that Canada can make a deep run this year.
Will they secure a quarter-final spot with another win?
Haiti meanwhile made a surprise run of their own to the Gold Cup semi-finals in 2019, their best performance since 1977.
This year though, they had to come through the Preliminary Rounds, beating Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 6-1 and Bermuda 4-1.
On matchday one, they faced the United States and were beaten 1-0; the game was far more one-sided than that might suggest.
Thus, Jean-Jacques Pierre’s side really need to win this one if they’re to have any chance of making the knockout rounds.
Who will get the win needed at Children’s Mercy Park?
Prediction: Haiti 1-3 Canada
These two have recent history against one another.
Two years ago, in the quarter-finals, Canada rushed into a 2-0 lead in Houston only for Haiti to fight back, eventually winning 3-2.
But, last month, Canada got revenge, knocking Haiti out of World Cup qualifying, winning 1-0 in Port-au-Prince and then 3-0 at SeatGeek Stadium.
Canada have won eight of their last nine meetings with Haiti, the 2019 Gold Cup quarter-final the only exception.
