Will an ultimately successful year for Spain end in, potentially, catastrophic disappointment?

In the summer, against expectations, la Roja reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020, only losing to Italy in a penalty shootout at Wembley.

Then, last month, they avenged that defeat to Gli Azzurri by beating them 2-1 at San Siro in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals.

In the showpiece final four days later, they were narrowly edged out by France, despite taking the lead through Mikel Oyarzabal.

Despite all of this relative success, Luis Enrique’s team are far from certain of their place at Qatar 2022.

In this group, they have just 13 points out of a possible 18, drawing when Greece visited Granada before losing in Solna in September.

So, Spain are currently second, two points behind Sweden.

Those two meet at Estadio de La Cartuja on Sunday night in, what could be, a huge winner takes all clash.

This though will only be the case if Spain take care of business in this tricky away fixture first.

If Spain fail to win in Athens, and Sweden beat Georgia in Batumi, la Roja will be condemned to the play-offs with a game to spare.

They could be in good company here because if there’s one set of fans who knows what it’s like to miss big tournaments recently it’s the Greeks.

Between 2004 and 2014, Greece appeared at two World Cups, three Euros and a Confederations Cup, famously winning the Euros in 2004.

But, since crashing out of Brazil 2014 to Costa Rica on penalties, they’ve failed to reach the three subsequent tournaments.

This time, John van ‘t Schip’s side currently have nine points in Group B, losing for the first time on matchday eight to Sweden in Stockholm.

They’re currently four points behind Spain so do have an outside shot at a play-off place but that would require a victory here.

Given that Greece have only won 14 of their last 37 competitive matches, it seems unlikely.

Although, they did beat Sweden at this venue as recently as September so it certainly is not impossible.

Will Spain leave the Athens Olympic Stadium with their World Cup dreams still in tact?

101 Great Goals prediction: Greece 1-2 Spain

Greece have only ever won one of 11 meetings with Spain, a 1-0 victory in Zaragoza in Euro 2004 qualifying.

Of course, a year later, Greece would win Euro 2004 while that remains Spain’s only home qualification defeat since 1991, a run of 73 matches.
