Can Greece keep alive their slim hopes of World Cup qualification?

Last time out, the Greeks enjoyed their biggest win for many years, beating Sweden 2-1 at the Athens Olympic Stadium.

Anastasios Bakasetas opened the scoring before Vangelis Pavlidis tapped home late winner.

John van ‘t Schip’s side now have six points in this group having previously drawn with Spain and both minnows, Georgia and Kosovo.

Between 2004 and 2014, Greece qualified for six major tournaments, of course famously winning the European Championships in 2004.

However, since going out to Costa Rica in Brazil seven years ago, they’ve won just 17 of 48 competitive matches.

Since October 2018, their only victories had come against Liechtenstein, Armenia, Bosnia, Finland, Kosovo, Moldova and that win over Sweden.

In this group, Greece are third, three points behind the Swedes, needing to win this one to stay in touch with the top two.

Georgia meanwhile came agonisingly close to their first ever major tournament, losing in the Euro 2020 play-off final to North Macedonia last November.

Since an outstanding Nations League campaign in 2018, that earned them that play-off spot, Georgia’s form has rapidly deteriorated.

In all, they’ve only won four of their last 21 competitive games, only beating Gibraltar, Estonia and Belarus in this time.

Last month, Willy Sagnol’s side lost both games, 1-0 at home to Kosovo and then 4-0 to Spain in Badajoz.

This leaves them rock bottom of the table with just one point, earned in a 1-1 draw in Thessaloniki in the reverse fixture with Greece.

Will there be a winner as the two meet again at Batumi Stadium?
