MADRID, SPAIN – SEPTEMBER 12: Eduardo Camavinga of Real Madrid celebrates 4-2 during the La Liga Santander match between Real Madrid v Celta de Vigo at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on September 12, 2021 in Madrid Spain (Photo by David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images)

It’s time for the biggest fixture in club football: El Clásico.

These two great rivals have met 246 times in their history with Real Madrid just two short of 100 victories.

However, the fixture’s two top-scorers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo (tied with Alfredo Di Stéfano) are no longer on show.

So, it’s time for new heroes to emerge as these great footballing and cultural rivals go head-to-head once again.

This is particularly the case for Barcelona who are relaying on youth in the post-Messi era.

They certainly clicked last weekend as goals from Ansu Fati, Memphis and then Philippe Coutinho saw the Blaugrana beat Valencia 3-1 at home.

Nevertheless, Ronald Koeman’s men have still only amassed 15 points from eight games so are down in seventh in the table.

On Wednesday though, they breathed new life into their Champions League campaign.

Gerard Piqué got the only goal in midweek as Barça downed Ukrainian champions Dynamo Kyiv 1-0.

Having lost their first two Group E games, both 3-0, to Benfica and Bayern Munich, six points from the double-header against Dynamo was a requirement.

They are halfway to achieving that before welcoming Benfica in a decisive matchday five encounter.

In the here and now, this was always going to be a pivotal week for Barça so can they end it with three wins out of three in the biggest game of all?

Real Madrid though were also in action against a Ukrainian heavyweight in midweek, demolishing Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0 away from home.

Vinícius Júnior bagged a brace while Karim Benzema and Rodrygo were also on target at Olimpiyskyi National Sports Complex.

This means los Blancos have six points in their group having, bizarrely, beaten Inter Milan but lost to FC Sheriff at the Bernabéu.

In La Liga, Carlo Ancelotti’s side haven’t been in action for three weeks when they also travelled to Catalonia, losing 2-1 to newly-promoted Espanyol.

That though was their first league defeat of the season so los Merengues are second, three points behind Real Sociedad, with a game in hand.

Real Madrid won both Clásicos last season, 3-1 exactly a year ago at this venue before a 2-1 win at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano.

However, Real ended the season empty handed with Barça only claiming the Copa del Rey.

Neither are at the peak of their powers but that only makes this an even more intriguing game.

Who will win El Clásico at Camp Nou?

Prediction: Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid

Since 2011/12, these two have met 34 times with the fixtures producing an average of 3.44 goals per game.
