LONDON, ENGLAND – JUNE 18: Steve Clarke, Head Coach of Scotland acknowledges the fans following the UEFA Euro 2020 Championship Group D match between England and Scotland at Wembley Stadium on June 18, 2021 in London, England. (Photo by Shaun Botterill – UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images)

A World Cup play-off place is now firmly within Scotland’s grasp!

What could possible go wrong now?

On Saturday evening, Scotland took on Israel at Hampden, just the seventh meeting between the two nations in three years.

In simple terms, the winner would be in pole position to book a play-off place while the loser’s destiny would be out of their own hands.

In typical Scotland fashion, they got off to a terrible start, going 1-0 down after just five minutes.

But, on the half hour mark, the hosts equalised; nice work down the left by Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson got the ball to John McGinn to bend into the far corner.

However, just seconds later, Israel retook the lead from a free-kick; Craig Gordon with the initial save before the rebound was put away.

In first half stoppage time though, Bill Gilmour was brought down and Scotland had a penalty.

Lyndon Dykes, who’d converted a pressure penalty in Vienna just month, saw this one saved as he attempt to go down the middle again.

Despite being 2-1 down at half time, Steve Clarke’s side didn’t panic and were back level on 57 minutes, or so they though.

Dykes’ equaliser was disallowed for a ‘high foot’ but, after video review, referee Szymon Marciniak decided to give the goal; 2-2!

The game seemed destine to end in an inconclusive draw until the 94th minute when a corner was scrambled in by Scott McTominay.

It was the Manchester United man’s first Scotland goal and one that led to bedlam, the like Hampden hadn’t witness for quite a while.

That victory means if Scotland win this game and beat Moldova away, a play-off place will be secured before Denmark visit Glasgow in the last game.

Will they avoid an immediate slip-up in Tórshavn?

Faroe Islands meanwhile have four points in this group, all of which have been accrued against Moldova.

They drew 1-1 in Chișinău on matchday one before beating Moldova 2-1 at home in September, Klæmint Olsen and Heini Vatnsdal scoring.

Last time out, Håkan Ericson’s side were beaten 2-0 by Austria at home.

In all, the Faroes have won 12 of their last 111 competitive matches with four of those victories coming in Nations League D.

They sound perfect to break Scotland hearts don’t they?

Will Scotland enjoy a pivotal victory at Tórsvøllur?
