England vs Croatia: Preview
England begin their Euro 2020 campaign when the take on 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
Gareth Southgate’s side finished top of Group A in qualifying on 21 points, with their only loss being a 2-1 defeat against Czech Republic back in October 2019.
The Three Lions head into the clash having won six games on the bounce across all competitions, which includes 1-0 victories over both Austria and Romania in their warm-up friendlies.
England have failed to win their first game at the Euro’s on nine attempts, and they will be keen to change this in front of 22,500 supporters.
Manchester United’s Harry Maguire has trained ahead of the opener to hand Southgate a boost, but he is unlikely to be risked right from the off.
Luke Shaw could be handed a start at left-back in the place of Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell, and Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings is likely to form a partnership alongside John Stones, should Maguire not start.
Tottenham striker and England captain Harry Kane will start up front, and he could be supported by the attacking trio of Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Mason Mount.
The lowdown on Croatia
Croatia, managed by Zlatko Dalic, finished top of Group E in the qualifiers on 17 points, but failed to win in both of their recent friendlies.
The Chequered Ones drew 1-1 against Armenia on June 1 and then suffered a 1-0 defeat to World No.1 ranked Belgium last Sunday.
Dalic is likely to start with Besiktas’ Domagoj Vida and Duje Caleta-Car of Marseille at back, with former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren a doubt through injury, however. Mateo Kovacic and 35-year-old Luka Modric will offer experience and pull the strings in midfield.
Dinamo Zagreb forward Bruno Petkovic is expected to be given the nod alongside Ante Rebic of AC Milan up front.
Both last faced each other in November 2018, with England winning 2-1.
England vs Croatia live streaming: Win probabilities
England have a 61% chance of winning.
Croatia are only given a 15% chance of winning.
The draw is valued at 24%.
