Colombia vs Ecuador: Preview

Colombia kick-off their Copa America campaign when they take on Ecuador in the Brazilian city of Cuiaba on Monday.

Reinaldo Rueda’s side, who last won the Copa America back in 2001, go into the tournament full of confidence having picked up four points from their previous two World Cup qualifiers.

Colombia sit 5th in the qualifying standings, and comfortably dispatched Peru 3-0, before playing out a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Argentina, having been 2-0 down.

Everton’s James Rodriguez will not be part of the tournament due to an ongoing fitness problem, but Porto pair Mateus Uribe and Luis Diaz will take over in midfield. Atlanta duo Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata will start up front, with Yerry Mina and Davinson Sanchez at the heart of the defence.

Ecuador, managed by Gustavo Alfaro, go into the clash having suffered back-to-back World Cup qualifying defeats to Brazil and Peru.

Brazil’s Richarlison and Neymar were on target as the five-time World Cup winners eased past Ecuador, before Alfaro’s side suffered a demoralising 2-1 home defeat to Peru last Tuesday.

Former West Ham forward Enner Valencia, who would become his nations all-time leading goalscorer should find the net on Monday, is expected to lead the line, with Brighton’s Moises Caicedo supporting him from midfield.

Both last faced each other in November 2020, with Ecuador winning 6-1.

Prediction: Colombia 2 – 0 Ecuador

Ecuador are finding it hard to produce any sort of momentum, and Colombia will be full of confidence having come from two goals down to draw with Argentina last time out. Despite Rodriguez being absent for the hosts, they should have enough to defeat Alfaro’s struggling side.
