Match preview

It’s one of the biggest games in the early stages of the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season when sixth-placed Rennes travel to the Orange Vélodrome to meet with the unbeaten Marseille who are looking to move on rapidly from another torrid display in Europe.

For all the brilliance fo Marseille in France, the club have struggled tremendously in the Champions League. They kicked things off with a 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, and by losing to the Europa League champions and Bundesliga strugglers, Eintracht Frankfurt, Marseille have now let in three goals and not scored one on the continental front so far.

Back in ligue 1, however, only Paris Saint-Germain sit ahead of Igor Tudor’s men on goals difference. Marseille do have the same impressive defensive record as the league leaders PSG, with just four goals going in. On the other hand, with 15 netted of their own, they remain unbeaten in Ligue 1 and are now on a five-game winning run after drawing with Brest at the start of August.

Rennes are once again looking excellent in Ligue 1. The club narrowly missed out on Champions League football last campaign, but after drawing and winning one in the Europa League, the club only have two losses on record so far this season against Lens and Lorient. Bruno Génésio’s side also smashed Auxerre 5-0 in the last outing where five different goalscorers got in on the act.

Rennes now sit eight points behind Marseille and with both teams continuing to impress on the goalscoring front, this clash could be a high-scoring one and help set the tone for the tense battle to get into the top five early on in France.
