Match Preview

Marseille will be aiming to stay hot on the heels of Paris Saint-Germain in the early title race in Ligue 1 with the second-placed side trailing the champions by goals difference after six games ahead of playing hosts to the 2020/21 champions Lille.

It’s been a sensational start to the season for Marseille, who are now on course to put in their best start to a Ligue 1 season in the past decade if they can keep on winning. They did, however, taste defeat for the first time this season when they travelled to Tottenham Hotspur and lost 2-0. The French side were not the favourites that day, but back in Ligue 1, they remain unbeaten.

Last time out, Marseille managed to get past Auxerre in the league 2-0, not long after demolishing Nice 3-0 away from home and beating Clermont Foot 1-0 too. This does mean the club are on a four-game winning run in Ligue after also beating Nantes, while their last three games have all seen Marseille register a clean sheet.

Lille have turned things around recently, but with 13 goals scored and 13 conceded, the club sit with two defeats on the board and three wins too. With the poor defensive record, however, it’s clear to see where the problems are for the champions of two seasons ago.

Lille did beat Montpellier on the road 3-1 last time out. What’s more, their only game of the season to not see over 2.5 goals across the six fixtures so far is the 1-1 draw with Nantes.
