Two of the high-flyers of last season will meet in Ligue 1 this weekend with Lens set to welcome Rennes to the Estadio Bollaert-Delelis this Saturday afternoon after another incredible start to the season for the home side.
At points in the 2021/22 campaign, it looked like Lens would squeeze their way into the European spots in the league. However, defeats towards the end of the campaign saw them drop out of the top five, but with them now sitting behind only champions Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1, there is great hope for them once again this time around.
Florian Sotoca has been the standout player for Lens so far, as he is coming off the back of a hat-trick against Brest on the opening week of the season. A 0-0 draw with Ajaccio keeps them adrift of PSG by two points, but in thrashing Monaco 4-1 away from home last weekend, Frank Haise is continuing to prove his worth as head coach.
Four different goalscorers got on in act in Monaco last week, as Lens saw six shots on target in the game and never once looked in doubt to get all three points.
Rennes are back in Europe this season after finishing fourth last campaign where they registered 20 wins and scored a stunning 82 goals in the league - only PSG with 90 netted more. In Ligue 1, however, a defeat on the opening weekend to strugglers Lorient and a 1-1 draw with Monaco soon after sparked a lot of concern for fans at Roazhon Park.
Rennes would get the win against Ajaccio last weekend, where Martin Terrier and Arthur Theate scored a goal each. Romain Slin and Lesley Ugochukwu both put a damper on the victory, however, with a red card each towards the end of the game.
