Match Preview

Auxerre will look to continue on with their excellent start to the new season when they meet with the high-flying Marseille this weekend on home soil as Jean-Marc Furlan’s men face their biggest test since returning to Ligue 1.

After earning promotion to the top flight after many years away, Auxerre have begun to establish themselves in the top half of Ligue 1 early on. In fact, with seven goals scored and nine let in after five games, they sit only behind the likes of Rennes and Lille on goals difference, although they are six points adrift of third-placed Marseille.

Marseille are one of the four clubs still yet to taste defeat in the French top flight this campaign. The club managed to edge past Clermont Foot last time out in the league, as Pape Gueye scored the game’s only goal from Marseille. It does now leave the club in third with a fantastic record of 11 goals scored and just three let in, which puts them as the best defensive side in the league.

Auxerre met with another unbeaten side in midweek, Lyon, with the club losing to the French giants 2-1. This did end a run of three games without tasting defeat for the Ligue 2 promoted side, as they managed to draw with Angers, beat Auxerre and also defeat Strasbourg.

Marseille are flying too high right now for Auxerre to have much of a chance in this one, although they do remain unbeaten at home. Alexis Sanchez has also turned up a bit of form lately, and he will fancy himself to add to the brace he bagged the other day.
