Port Vale have only won three of their last 12 meetings with Mansfield, losing five. The Vale won promotion via the play-offs in 1989, before losing a final in 1993. None of Mansfield’s three play-off campaigns have ended in promotion, although they did win the EFL Trophy at the old Wembley in 1987, a competition Port Vale have won twice.

After 294 gruelling days and 48 matches, a whole season’s work comes down to this.

Both Port Vale and Mansfield Town are desperate to gain promotion to League One, but only one will be celebrating at the home of English football.

Of the two, Port Vale finished two places higher in the table, although there was a mere one point between them.

The Vale came eighth in the Championship as recently as 1997, but are currently enduring a fifth successive season in League Two.

To get to Wembley, Darrell Clarke’s side ousted Swindon Town in the semi-finals, but did so the hard way.

The Robins dominated the first leg at the County Ground, but James Wilson’s late goal, halving the deficit to 2-1, gave his side hope.

Just eight minutes into the meeting at Vale Park, the former Manchester United striker struck again, and 2-2 it finished on aggregate after 210 minutes.

In the subsequent shootout, when David Worrall and Ryan Edmondson missed Vale’s second and third spot-kicks, their promotion dreams looked over.

However, the Valiants managed to score their next five so Ellis Iandolo’s skied effort sparked wild celebrations and a pitch invasion.

Now, will Port Vale claim victory in a play-off final for the first time since 1989?

Mansfield Town meanwhile have never gained promotion via the play-offs, falling in a 2o04 final as well as semi-finals in 2012 and 2019.

The Stags are the lowest-ranked side of the quartet, so went into their semi-final against Northampton as underdogs.

Nevertheless, top-scorer Rhys Oates and then Jordan Bowery were both on target at Field Mill.

Then, by the time Stephen McLaughlin opened the scoring three days later, Sixfields was stunned silent and the Yellows had enough to get through.

Thus, Nigel Clough is now one game away from taking Mansfield back into League One for the first time since 1993.

During the season, these two played out a 1-1 draw in the East Midlands before Port Vale prevailed 3-1 back in Burslem as recently as March.

That though counts for nothing, so who will claim an historic promotion at Wembley?

Rhys Oates is Mansfield’s main goal threat, looking to add to his 12 goals so far this season.

Matty Longstaff meanwhile has scored six times since arriving on loan from Newcastle in January.

He’d started ten consecutive matches prior to the second leg win at Northampton but, if fit, will presumably return here.

Winger Jamie Murphy began the season by scoring for Hibs against FC Santa Coloma in a UEFA Europa Conference League qualifier in Andorra.

He, like Longstaff, is likely to return to the XI, looking to end his campaign with a goal at Wembley.

36 year old James Perch will make his 616th career appearance at centre-back; it’ll be his first at Wembley since an FA Cup semi-final eight years ago.

James Wilson scored in both legs of the semi-final, taking his tally to 14 for the campaign.

Having also netted on the final day against Exeter, Wilson is looking to score in four successive appearance for the first time in his senior career.

Ryan Edmondson, also formally of Aberdeen, could be his partner in attack, coming in for Kian Harratt.

Aaron Martin was only fit enough for the bench in the home leg against Swindon but could return at the back.

Connor Hall and Nathan Smith will complete the trio with James Gibbons the most likely man to miss out.
