Given Sevilla’s horrendous form in La Liga, could they be prime candidates for a Copa del Rey upset?

On Saturday, los Nervionenses were beaten again, this time going down 2-1 at Montilivi against Girona.

Tanguy Nianzou gave Sevilla the lead in Catalonia, but the home side won it with two minutes to go.

So, Jorge Sampaoli’s team have won just one of their last eight league games, meaning they are above the relegation zone by virtue of goal difference alone.

In contrast, Sevilla have cruised through three Copa ties to get this far, scoring ten times and conceding none in wins over Velarde, Juventud de Torremolinos and Linares Deportivo.

This though is likely to be a tougher assignment, so will the five-times winners book their place in the quarter-finals?

Deportivo Alavés meantime saw their six-year stay in the Primera División come to an end last season, ending up rock bottom of the table.

Right now, Luis García Plaza’s team are in the Segunda División play-off places, despite a 1-0 defeat in Oviedo on Friday night.

Meantime, in the Copa, el Glorioso have seen off Lleida, Mérida and then top-flight Real Valladolid to reach the round of 16.

Alavés actually got all the way to the final of this competition just six years ago, beaten by Barcelona at the Vicente Calderón.

So, can the second-tier outfit spring a surprise at Mendizorrotza, or will Sevilla’s quality see them to victory?
