De la Fuente, Miguel
Rayo Vallecano have won four of their last five meetings with Alavés, including a 2-0 win at Vallecas in December. However, Alavés’ sole victory in this period was a thumping 5-1 win in Madrid four years ago. Just seven of their last 19 meetings have seen both teams score.
It’s now or never if Deportivo Alavés are to save themselves from relegation.
Last weekend, el Glorioso were beaten 1-0 at El Sadar by Osasuna, with the only goal coming in the second minute of injured time.
Heartbreak for new Head Coach Julio Velázquez in his first match at the helm, having taken over from José Luis Mendilibar the previous week.
Alavés have now lost four on the bounce, so are rock bottom of the table, seven points from safety.
There is hope though as they still have to play Mallorca, Levante and Cádiz this season, the three clubs directly above them.
But, if the Basque side are to pull off a great escape, they really need to be winning this one.
Rayo Vallecano meanwhile are still looking for their first league victory of 2022, despite being in the Champions League places on Christmas Day.
Last weekend, los Franjirrojos held Valencia to a 1-1 draw thanks to Sergi Guardiola’s late equaliser at Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas.
This means Andoni Iraola’s men have drawn three of their last four which takes their tally to 34 points, which should be enough to survive.
Will Rayo win for the first time since 18 December or can Alavés reignite their survival aspirations at Mendizorrotza?
Deportivo Alavés team news
Alavés need Joselu to rediscover his scoring tough as he’s now failed to score in seven successive matches.
Despite this, he’s got 12 goals to his name this season, the same number as all of his teammates combined.
Rayo Vallecano team news
Rayo are still without Radamel Falcao who hasn’t played since 26 February due to injury.
Sergi Guardiola has proved to be an able deputy though, netting his seventh of the season last weekend.
Goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski hasn’t kept a clean sheet since the reverse fixture, a 2-0 home win over Alavés in mid-December.
