Safe to say, it’s been a difficult couple of weeks for Barcelona, so can they put a string of wins together prior to the World Cup break?

A week and a half ago, Barça were, pretty much, knocked out the Champions League, thanks to a chaotic 3-3 draw with Inter.

Four days later, the Blaugrana were simply out-played and out-classed by Real Madrid, swatted aside 3-1 in el Clásico at the Bernabéu.

So, with pressure mounting on Xavi, he needed to see a response on Thursday night, and got just that.

Robert Lewandowski’s quick-fire brace, with Ansu also scoring, saw Barcelona easily beat Villarreal 3-0 in midweek; all the goals coming in a seven minute first half spree.

The Catalan giants remain second in the table, three points behind Real Madrid, under pressure to continue winning.

Athletic Club Bilbao meantime made an incredibly fast start to the season, winning five of their first seven, but have stumbled in recent weeks.

The Lions could only draw 2-2 with Getafe on Tuesday, despite leading twice through Iñaki Williams and then Raúl García.

So, Ernesto Valverde’s team are now winless in three, having also drawn at Sevilla and lost to Atlético Madrid last Sunday night.

Nevertheless, Athletic sit sixth, two points below fourth, which isn’t bad at all given that their aim to return to European competition.
