Perth and Newcastle draw; New York knock out the MLS champions in the playoffs

Perth Glory 2 – Newcastle Jets 2 (A-League, November 9, 2008) Joel Griffiths opened the scoring for the Jets in the 17th minute, slamming home a quality strike before Nikita Rukavytsya replied 11 minutes later. A goal from Newcastle’s Tarek Elrich on the stroke of halftime gave the visitors the lead, and it look bleak for the Glory when Jamie Coyne was dismissed for a challenge on Jin-Hyung Sung. But it was 10 versus 10 after Daniel Piorkowski was dismissed as well eight minutes later for a clash with Scott Bulloch. A frantic finish was capped with a Eugene Dadi retaken penalty for Perth.


Houston Dynamo 0 – New York Red Bulls 3 (Agg. 1-4) (MLS playoffs, November 9, 2008) Richards gave the Red Bulls a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, before Juan Pablo Angel converted a penalty kick in the 36th minute after Ricardo Clark handled in the area. The Red Bulls put the to bed in the 80th minute, when Richards teed up John Wolyniec for the third of the night.
