North Queensland Fury 2 – Sydney FC 3 (A-League, August 8, 2009) John Aloisi found himself though on goal before coolly finishing to give the visitors 1-nil lead after four minutes. Much-hyped youngster Kofi Danning then scored Sydney’s second, turning his defender inside out and smashing a shot into the bottom left corner. Rostyn Griffiths headed a goal back for the Fury before the interval and then Robbie Fowler announced his presence in the A-League with a second half penalty to level the scores. John Aloisi had the final say, scoring a 72nd minute penalty to give Sydney the points.
Brisbane Roar 1 – Gold Coast United 3 (A-League, August 8, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Gold Coast started their A-League life with a superb away win capped with goals for prized-assets Jason Culina and Shane Smeltz. A late Sergio Van Diyk penalty gave the home side some hope, but it was dashed minutes later when Robson added the third.
Japanese All-Stars 4 – South Korean All-Stars 1 (Exhibition, August 8, 2009) The J-League side took the lead in the 14th minute when Marquinhos scored with a deflected strike. Lee Jung-soo doubled the lead for the Japanese in the 60th with a close range shot, and Kengo Nakamura made it 3-nil in the 72nd. Juninho added a fourth shortly after, before Choi Sung-kuk scored a consolation penalty for the Koreans.
