VIDEO: Tevez hits trips as Man City see off 10-man Wigan; Almost promoted Newcastle beat Forest; Santander lose 7-goal thriller at Bilbao; River slip up again

Manchester City 3 – Wigan 0 (Premier League, March 29, 2010) City, five points behind fourth-placed Tottenham before kick-off, struggled (first half highlights here) until Wigan’s Gary Caldwell was shown a red card for a foul on Tevez after 56 minutes. Carlos Tevez then put City ahead on minutes when he tapped in as Wigan keeper Vladimir Stojkovic failed to gather a routine ball under pressure from Adebayor. Another simple finish from Tevez made it 2-0 two minutes later and Tevez wrapped up the points with his best effort of the night, a classy finish after waltzing into the Wigan area.

Newcastle 2 – Nottingham Forest 0 (Championship, March 29, 2010) Minutes after coming off the bench Shola Ameobi proved the difference, the forward collecting Nolan’s pass to turn and shoot beyond Camp (Chris Hughton’s celebration here). Forest keeper Lee Camp then made two super saves to deny Nolan and Guthrie from adding a second, but he could do little when Jose Enrique blasted the ball home for the Toon’s second and his first goal of his career to secure all three points and edge Newcastle closer to automatic promotion.

Athletic Bilbao 4 – Racing Santander 3 (La Liga, March 29, 2010) Fernando Llorente scored Bilbao’s opener and then set up strike partner Gaizka Toquero to make it 2-0 after 17 minutes. Racing pulled a goal back just before the break through Mohamed Tchite but Llorente then won and scored a penalty 13 minutes from time to put Athletic 3-1 up. The visitors hit back again with a brilliant overhead kick from substitute Ivan Bolado, but they suffered a setback almost immediately when defender Lozano Oriol picked up two yellow cards in as many minutes to be sent for an early bath. Athletic took advantage of their numerical superiority when Markel Susaeta made it 4-2 in the 88th minute, and although Racing pulled another goal back through Bolado deep into injury-time, it was not enough to deny the hosts.
