Xavi stars as brilliant Barca win the Clasico; Sevilla comeback at Malaga; Xerez face the drop after Getafe loss

Real Madrid 0 – Barcelona 2 (La Liga, April 10, 2010) (Longer highlights here.) In the fever-pitch atmosphere ahead of El Clasico, over five hundred Barcelona fans loudly welcomed their side when the Catalans touched down in Madrid. After a niggly opening half hour, it was that man again, Lionel Messi opening the scoring after a majestic through ball from Xavi. Ten minutes into the second half brilliant Barca grabbed their second, Xavi played in Pedro who scored yet another crucial goal this season.

Villarreal 1 – Sporting Gijon 0 (La Liga, April 10, 2010) A close-range header from Diego Godin after 16 minutes put Villarreal ahead  at home to Sporting Gijon.

Malaga 1 – Sevilla 2 (La Liga, April 10, 2010) Manchester City loanee Felipe Caicedo put current employers Malaga into a 17th minute lead against Sevilla tapping home a fumble from 2-yards. Cala pounced on some poor keeping to bring Sevilla level in the 66th minute. The away side then completed their turnaround when Lolo headed home their second with five minutes to go.

Tenerife 0 – Valladolid 0 (La Liga, April 10, 2010) Javier Clemente’s first match in charge of Real Valladolid finished in a goalless draw at Tenerife, leaving both teams rooted in the drop zone.

Xerez 0 – Getafe 1 (La Liga, April 10, 2010) Xerez’s chances of survival were dealt a huge blow as they went down 1-0 at home to a Getafe side chasing a Europa League spot. Rafa Lopez’s header on the hour proved enough to give the visitors a hard-earned victory, despite the late dismissal of Pedro Leon.
