Ronaldo & Kaka on target at Real hit Villarreal for six; Almeria down Atleti; Bilbao hit Tenerife for four; Gijon win at sorry Zaragoza

Real Madrid 6 – Villarreal 2 (La Liga, February 21, 2010) (Longer highlights here.) A sparkling free-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo rocketed like an arrow into the Villarreal net as Real took an 18th minute lead. Real claimed a second after Higuain received the gentlest of touches in the box and Ricky Kaka did the business from the spot. The Yellow Submarine pulled a goal back on the half hour when Marcos Senna cracked home a spectacular free-kick past Casillas that rivaled C-Ron’s earlier effort. A sweeping attack from front to back gave Real their third goal 10 minutes after the break, Ronaldo feeding Gonzalo Higuain who applied the finish. Back came Villarreal, a well-worked attack was finished off by Nilmar. In the final 20 minutes Real killed off the game in style as Higuain grabbed his second, before Ronaldo teed up Kaka for his brace. A late Xabi Alonso penalty wrapped up Real’s convincing win.

Almeria 1 – Atletico Madrid 0 (La Liga, February 21, 2010) Almeria broke Atletico hearts when Pablo Piatti popped up with a goal in the closing minutes of the match, the striker drilling a low shot past Asenjo at the near post.

Athletic Bilbao 4 – Tenerife 1 (La Liga, February 21, 2010) (Longer highlights here.) The afternoon started badly for the away side, and got progressively worse, Jose Culebras saw red for a late lunge on Gaizka Toquero inside the area, and striker Fernando Llorente made no mistake from the spot. Toquero himself made it two five minutes later, and in the second half a comfortable afternoon for the Basque side was rounded off by further goals from Andoni Iraola and Igor Gabilondo. Alfaro netted a consolation but the Islanders remain without a win on their travels this season and are firmly in relegation danger.

Malaga 2 – Espanyol 1 (La Liga, February 21, 2010) Fernando opened the scoring on 13 minutes, converting a close range header following a pass from Duda, but the away side cancelled out his effort thanks to a scrambled equaliser from Victor Ruiz right on halftime. Victor Obinna was the hero for Malaga, slamming the ball home from inside the six yard box in the second half.

Osasuna 1 – Valladolid 1 (La Liga, February 21, 2010) Haris Medunjanin netted what looked to be the winner for the visitors from some way out, but his side could not hold on, and were broken thanks to an instinctive finish by Javier Camunas, who converted a close range header four minutes from time.

Zaragoza 1 – Sporting Gijon 3 (La Liga, February 21, 2010) (Longer highlights here.) Mate Bilic got Gijon their their way converting a Lora header across goal with his right foot before the break. Sporting made it two as Luis Moran coolly slotted home a Miguel de las Cuevas through pass. Javier Arizmendi gave the home side brief hope with a goal in the closing stages, but David Barral ensured that the points were heading back to El Molinon with the clincher deep into injury time.
