Real edge past Atletico to go top; Yellow Submarine sink Sevilla; Getafe stun Deportivo, Xerez beat Valladolid

Real Madrid 3 – Atletico Madrid 2 (La Liga, March 28, 2010) Atletico struck first in the Madrid derby at the Bernabeu when, after nine minutes, the visitors worked a throw-in from left to right and Jose Antonio Reyes was able to collect the ball and curl a beauty into the far corner. Real pulled level early in the second half when Xabi Alonso slide home Albiol’s flick-on at the back post. The turnaround was complete in the 55th minute when Alonso sprayed a glorious pass to Alvaro Arbeloa down the right and the full-back cut inside and produced a killer finish. Real looked to be smooth sailing when Gonzalo Higuain opened u pa 2-goal cushion for the hosts, but Diego Forlan netted a 68th minute penalty to keep the match alive.

Villarreal 3 – Sevilla 0 (La Liga, March 28, 2010) Early goals from Giuseppe Rossi and Joseba Llorente fired Villarreal into a 2-nil lead over Sevilla in the opening 20 minutes. Bobby Pires wrapped up the points in injury time when he streaked clear on the breakaway and coolly finished.

Osasuna 1 – Almeria 0 (La Liga, March 28, 2010) An early header from veteran striker Walter Pandiani earned Osasuna victory.

Deportivo La Coruna 1 – Getafe 3 (La Liga, March 28, 2010) Miku opened the scoring, tapping home after excellent work from Pedro Leon set up the opportunity. Ten minutes later, it was two when the unfortunate Ze Castro inexplicably headed the ball past Manu and into his own net. Getafe were impressive on the break all afternoon, and Miku added a third on the hour mark, scrambling home inside the six yard box after an assist from Manu.

Xerez 3 – Valladolid 0 (La Liga, March 28, 2010) Last-place Xerez maintained their hopes of remaining in the Spanish league by beating fellow relegation battler Valladolid. Victor Sanchez converted Carrilero’s pass after two minutes before bulky striker Miguel Angel Carrilero nodded an inswinging free kick home in the 36th. Mario Bermejo then blasted a penalty past Haris Medunjanin in the 71st, after the Valladolid midfielder replaced goalkeeper Justo Villar, who was sent off for tripping Bermejo.

Espanyol 0 – Sporting Gijon 0 (La Liga, March 28, 2010) Shot-shy Espanyol once again failed to find the net as stubborn Sporting Gijon held on for a stalemate in Barcelona.
