La Liga: Barcelona drops their first home points of the season against Villarreal; Wins for Valencia & Atletico Madrid

Barcelona 1 – Villarreal 1 (La Liga, January 2, 2010) It took Barcelona just seven minutes to open their account against Villarreal, Alves whipped in a cross that Henry crashed against the post and Pedro Rodriguez was on hand to control the rebound and fire the ball into the net. (First half highlights here.) The Yellow Submarine relatiated five minutes after the break when David Fuster met a cross at the back post and beat Valdes with a shot that went across the keeper.

Valencia 1 – Espanyol 0 (La Liga, January 2, 2010) A 92nd minute header from giant Nikola Zigic, meeting Joaquin’s right wing cross, earned Los Che the points at the death.

Atletico Madrid 2 – Sevilla 1 (La Liga, January 2, 2010) Sevilla went ahead just before half-time through a Renato header. Atletico levelled just three minutes into the second half, though, as goalkeeper Andres Palop saved Diego Forlan’s shot only to see the ball bounce straight back into the net off defender Ivica Dragutinovic for an own goal. Sevilla saw Aldo Duscher sent off as he was shown a second yellow card for a dangerous tackle on 72 minutes and Antonio Lopez had the left word as he was left unmarked in the area from a Simao set piece.
