Deportivo secure Copa win at Valencia; Atletico Madrid thrashed by Recreativo; Santander edge giant-killers Alcorcon 3-2

Valencia 1 – Deportivo La Coruna 2 (Copa del Rey last 16 first-leg, January 6, 2010) Depor went 2-up after a goalless first half at Valencia, Andres Guardado stabbing home the opener before Pablo Alvarez doubled the visitors’ lead. David Silva pulled a goal back for Los Che.

Celta Vigo 1 – Villarreal 1 (Copa del Rey last 16 first-leg, January 6, 2010) Villarreal took a 12th minute lead at Celta Vigo when a delicious through-ball was sent through to Giuseppe Rossi and the former Manchester United striker coolly steered in the opener. Celta equalised a minute from the interval when Arthuro guided a beautiful header in the top corner from a free-kick.

Alcorcon 2 – Racing Santander 3 (Copa del Rey last 16 first-leg, January 6, 2010) Defender Christian Fernandez was in the right place to head Racing into the lead at Alcorcon’s tiny stadium to the south-west of Madrid in the 31st minute. Second half strikes from Alex Geijo and Jose Moraton either side of an Inigo Lopez goal gave the visitors an apparently comfortable lead but Borja Gomez netted with two minutes left to keep Alcorcon’s slim hopes of causing a second-leg upset alive.

Recreativo Huelva 3 – Atletico Madrid 0 (Copa del Rey last 16 first-leg, January 6, 2010) Atletico’s troubled campaign took another turn for the worse with a defeat at the second division side. Bruno Mezza bagged the opener, Jeronimo Barrales doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Tomas Ujfalusi had been sent off and late on Daniel Candeias scored the third.
