Deportivo move away from the drop zone winning at Athletic Bilbao; Malaga win at Gijon

Athletic Bilbao 1 – Deportivo La Coruna 2 (La Liga, January 2, 2010) Deportivo took a controversial 20th minute lead when a soft penalty was converted by Adrian. Both sides were reduced to ten men before the interval, but it was Depor who dealt with the lower numbers better early in the second half when Adrian won a high ball on the edge of the Bilbao box and then saw his shot deflect like a rocket into the roof of the net. Fernando Llorente set up a tense finish scoring two minutes from time but Depor held on for the points.

Sporting Gijon 1 – Malaga 2 (La Liga, January 2, 2010) Diego Castro opened for Gijon from the spot but Weligton pulled Malaga level from a set play. The turnaround was complete before the hour mark. Eliseu was scythed down by Ivan Cuellar, and the experienced Apono stroked home from the spot.
