Sevilla 2 – Valencia 1 (Agg. 4-4) (Copa del Rey, January 29, 2009) Valencia looked to be cruising when Carlos Marchena’s header put them in front in the eighth minute, opening a 4-2 aggregate lead. Freddy Kanoute equalised before the break and in the dying minutes Squillaci hooked home Renato’s corner to set up a last-four clash on away goals against Athletic Bilbao.
Barcelona 3 – Espanyol 2 (Agg. 3-2) (Copa del Rey, January 29, 2009) Bojan Krkic did the early damage for Barca, slotting in the first after 35 minutes and, after being released by a beautiful through-ball by Xavi at the start of the second period, Bojan struck again. The match looked all but over when Gerald Pique headed in the third, but Espanyol rallied to set up a nevous ending. Coro’s shot took a wicked deflection before Jose Callejon scored the goal of the night with a brilliant strike from 30-yards out. But Barca held on to progress to the semis.
