Universitario Peru sink Lanus & Banfield hit four at Cuenca in the Copa Libertadores; Corinthians win, Palmeiras lose in Brazil

Universitario Peru 2 – Lanus 0 (Copa Libertadores, February 17, 2010) Piero Alva netted the winner after 18 minutes, eluding three defenders and firing home from just outside the area, before Gianfranco Labarthe sealed the triumph by heading home Rodolfo Espinoza’s cross with two minutes remaining.

Deportivo Cuenca 1 – Banfield 4 (Copa Libertadores, February 17, 2010) Left-sided midfielder Walter Erviti put Banfield ahead with a long-range shot nine minutes before halftime. Home keeper Esteban Dreer kept out Ramirez’s header two minutes later, but Sebastian Fernandez pounced on the rebound to make it 2-0. Fernandez extended the visitors’ lead 16 minutes into the second half with a  header, and James Rodriguez finished off a counter-attack to notch his team’s fourth before Gabriel Mendez’s penalty four minutes from time finally gave the Deportivo fans something to cheer.


Mogi Mirim 0 – Corinthians 3 (Campeonato Paulista, February 17, 2010) Souza netted a brace and Chicao netted a third as Corinthians cruised to victory.

Palmeiras 1 – Sao Caetano 4 (Campeonato Paulista, February 17, 2010) Ramos hit a brace as Palmeiras were stunned at home.

Flamengo 1 – Botafogo 2 (Taca Guanabara play-0ffs, February 17, 2010) Flamengo opened the scoring in the 24th when midfielder Vinicius Pacheco fired a right-footed shot from inside the area after a pass from striker Vagner Love. Botafogo started their comeback in the 33rd with a goal by defender Marcelo Cordeiro, and Caio netted the winner for Botafogo at Maracana stadium with a close-range shot in the 83rd minute.
