South Africa chalk up a record 5-nil over Guatemala

South Africa 5 – Guatemala 0 (International Friendly, May 31, 2010) Katelgo Mphela got the scoreboard ticking in the 12th minute when he converted a penalty which was awarded in dubious circumstances; Reneilwe Letsholonyane then doubled the hosts lead with a second goal in the 26th. Mphela set up substitute Surprise Moriri for the third just after the restart, and Mphela got his second also from the penalty spot in the 56th minute. Bafana Bafana’s final goal of the night was their best; it came from the boot of Bernard Parker who sent a scorching left footed shot screeching past Guatemala substitute goalkeeper Barrios eight minutes from time.

England 2 – Spain 1 (Under-17 European championships final, May 30, 2010) England’s Under-17 side became European champions for the first time, beating Spain in front of Vicente Del Bosque’s World Cup squad. Gerard had put Spain in front on 22 minutes with a deflection of Andre Wisdom and the Liverpool defender responded with the equaliser before the break. Three minutes later Ipswich striker Connor Wickham added to his burgeoning reputation with the winner.
