Rooney stars as England beat the Platinum Stars 3-nil; Brazil batter Tanzania 5-1

Platinum Stars 0 – England 3 (International Friendly, June 7, 2010) (Longer highlights here.) England needed just two minutes to open the scoring in their final warm up match against the Platinum Stars, captain Steven Gerrard was the provider and his right-sided cut-back was tapped home by Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe. England then had a major let-off minutes later after Glen Johnson gave away a reckless penalty but Bradley Grobler fluffed his opportunity from 12-yards as he blazed his penalty high over Joe Hart’s crossbar. England doubled their lead early in the second half when Rooney beat two players on the right before teeing up Joe Cole who buried the ball in the bottom corner. Wayne Rooney then scored his first England goal of the summer to make it 3-nil, the Manchester United striker crashing home a classy shot after good work from James Milner down the left.

In the 53rd minute Brazil went 3-up courtesy of a superb solo effort from Ramires, the midfielder collected the ball 30-yards from goal, raced forward and thundered a beauty into the far corner. Fifteen minutes from time Brazil notched a fourth when a sweeping team attack was finished by Kaka. Tanzania did have something to cheer about in the 86th minute when Jabir Aziz steered a fine header into the far post when he was left unmarked from a corner, but Brazil had the final say when Ramires notched a fifth.
