Bolton 2 – Manchester City 0 (Premier League, November 2, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) As Manchester City continued to under-perform away from home, the Reebok had to wait until 15 minutes from time to see the deadlock broken. Cahill fed in a cross from the right and Ricardo Gardner (offside) was able to direct the ball goalwards off the underside of the bar. The result was confirmed in the 88th minute as a fired up Gardner burst down the left and his cutback was turned into his own net by Richard Dunne. The win lifts Bolton off the foot of the table, with bottom-club Newcastle playing Aston Villa on Monday night.
Watford 3 – Blackpool 4 (Championship, November 1, 2008) Watford had led three times through Will Hoskins, Grzegorz Rasiak and Tommy Smith but Blackpool equalised each time with Keith Southern, Ben Burgess and Taylor-Fletcher scoring before Alan Gow‘s last-gasp effort, two minutes into injury-time, gave the Seasiders the win.
Cheltenham 0 – Leeds 1 (League One, November 1, 2008) A header from Luciano Becchio after only seven minutes was enough for Leeds to take the points.
Al Ahly 2 – Coton Sport 0 (African Champions League final first-leg, November 2, 2008) Wael Gomaa swooped in with a diving header from Mohamed Aboutrika’s free-kick to open the score as Al Ahly started the game at a furious pace. Flavio added a second on the quarter-hour mark, glancing header wide of the keeper from Ahmed Hassan’s set-play.
Hearts 0 – Celtic 2 (SPL, November 2, 2008) Shaun Maloney gave Celtic the lead in the seventh minute when he volleyed the ball back over goalkeeper Janos Balogh after he had punched away a free-kick from Andreas Hinkel. Gary Caldwell then made it two from close range, although Hearts’ players claimed he used hisÂ hand.
Almeria 1 – Real Madrid 1 (La Liga, November 2, 2008) A brilliant whipped cross from Higuain was expertly steered home by the head of Raul as Real Madrid took the lead at Almeria. But the hosts equalised with nine minutes to go through their young Argentine sensation Pablo Piatti.
Sporting Gijon 3 – Numancia 1 (La Liga, November 2, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Asier Goiria scored for Numancia in the 20th before Luis Moran took advantage of a poor clearance by the Numancia keeper in the 33rd to equalise. Bilic scored with a 65th minute header, and the Croatian striker made it 3-1 from the spot.
Valladolid 3 – Sevilla 2 (La Liga, November 2, 2008) Goals from Dirnel Renato and Jesus Navas put the visitors in control, but Luis Fabiano’s dismissal changed the course of the game. Sesma Jonathan pulled one back before half-time with substitute Fabian Canobbio scoring twice after the interval to cap a remarkable comeback.
Recreativo Huelva 1 – Getafe 1 (La Liga, November 2, 2008) Javi Guerrero opened the scoring only for Iago BouzÃ³n Amoedo to collect his second yellow card. Recreativo tried to battle on but Juan Angel Albin’s 83rd minute effort salvaged a draw.
Espanyol 1 – Osasuna 0 (La Liga, November 2, 2008) Raul Tamudo’s penalty settled the match.
Real Betis 0 – Deportivo La Coruna 3 (La Liga, November 2, 2008) Riki gave Depor the lead, heading in a cross on the hour mark. Lafita dribbled his way into the Betis box before delivering a fierce drive past Casto at his near post fro the second, and Lafita struck the third goal on 87 minutes with the home defence appealing in vain for offside.
AC Milan 1 – Napoli 0 (Serie A, November 2, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Napoli’s Argentine forward German Denis gifted Milan all three points last night by heading into his own net with four minutes remaining at the San Siro. The win lifted the Rossoneri into first place for the first time since 2004.
Lazio 1 – Catania 0 (Serie A, November 2, 2008) An 85th minute winner from Pasquale Foggia gave Lazio the spoils in a hard fought victory over Catania.
Udinese 2 – GenoaÂ 2 (Serie A, November 2, 2008) Gaetano D’Agostino fired high-flying Udinese into an early lead over Genoa from the penalty spot. Genoa hit back in the second half, Diego Milito levelled from the penalty spot and three minutes later Sculli fired the visitors ahead. Udinese fought back, Quagliarella equalising for the hosts.
Siena 1 – Fiorentina 0 (Serie A, November 2, 2008) Siena’s Moroccan international Houssine Kharja headed home the winner in the 76th minute.
Cagliari 5 – Bologna 1 (Serie A, November 2, 2008) Marco Di Vaio opened the scoring for Bologna in the 19th minute but Robert Acquafresca equalised in the 45th minute and it was one-way traffic in the second half. Daniele Conti made it 2-1 three minutes after the restart, Acquafresca scored again in the 52nd minute, before Jeda netted a late brace (69 and 85) to pile the misery on Bologna.

Borussia Dortmund 1 – Bochum 1 (Bundesliga, November 2, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Tomasz Zdebel put Bochum in the lead at Dortmund with a stunning volley from 25-yards after a corner was only partially cleared. Dortmund restored parity on the stroke of halftime, a long ball was collected by Mohamed Zidan and the forward scuffed his shot into the net.
Monchengladbach 1 – Eintracht Frankfurt 2 (Bundesliga, November 2, 2008) Frankfurt fell behind when Marco Russ deflected a cross from Marko Marin into his own net after 12Â minutes. But three minutes later Martin Fenin tied the game and Michael Fink scored the winning goal seven minutes into the secondÂ half.
Lyon 2 – Le Mans 0 (Ligue 1, November 2, 2008) Karim Benzema opened the scoring with a fine solo goal, firing into the top corner from a tight angle on 21 minutes. Juninho doubled the advantage in the 57th minute, exploiting a defensive blunder to score with a low shot from inside the area.
Rennes 1 – Sochaux 0 (Ligue 1, November 2, 2008) Jimmy Briand scored a penalty within the opening sixty seconds of the match.
Le Havre 2 – Monaco 3 (Ligue 1, November 2, 2008) First half goals from Leandro Cufre and Alexandre Licata put Monaco in control. Loic Nestor got one back for the hosts three minutes after the break but seconds later, Park Chu-Young re-established Monaco’s two-goal cushion. Amadou Alassane score Le Havre’s second on the hour mark but they could not find an equaliser.
Roda 0 – Feyenoord 4 (Eredivisie, November 2, 2008) Feyenoord claimed only their second victory of the season as they hammered Rodain the second half to pull clear of trouble. Georginio Wijnaldum opened the scoring in the 52nd minute before Leroy Fer (56), Roy Makaay (66) and Diego Biseswar (70) also hit the target.
Vitoria Guimaraes 1 – Benfica 2 (Superliga, November 2, 2008) Suazo and Sidnei scored for Benfica in the opening stages of the match. Douglas pulled a goal back for the home side, but Benfica held on despite playing the entire second half without Jose Antonio Reyes after he saw red.
Leixoes 2 – Pacos Ferreira 1 (Superliga, November 2, 2008) Leixoes continue to lead in Portugal, Wesley and Diogo Valente gave the hosts a comfortable advantage in the first half. William’s 81st minute goal came too late for the visiting side.

Club Brugge 4 – Kortrijk 1 (Jupiler League, November 1, 2008) Jimmy Hempte gave the visitors the lead in the 11th minute but Philippe Clement equalised five minutes later. Ivan Leko’s penalty gave Club Brugge the lead shortly after the half hour mark, and after Verbrugghe was sent off two minutes into the second half and a brace from Joseph Akpala sealed the victory for the Belgium league leaders.
Galatasaray 3 – Gaziantepspor 1 (Super Lig, November 2, 2008) It took just 10 minutes for Harry Kewell to open the scoring, Cassio Lincoln added a second just a minute later. The visitors pulled a goal back with a Tabata penalty six minutes before halftime but the points were secured by Arda Turan with eight minutes left.

Wisla Krakow 2 – Ruch Chorzow 0 (Ekstraklasa, November 2, 2008) Hotshot marksmen Pawel Brozek gave Wisla the lead with a fine shot from outside the box, and Diaz powered home a header just before the break to see off Ruch.
Perth Glory 2 – Wellington Phoenix 0 (A-League, November 2, 2008) Nikita Rukavytsya grabbed a brace for the Glory, and Wellington were left rooted to the foot of the table.
Newcastle Jets 1 – Queensland Roar 2 (A-League, November 2, 2008) The home side started well as Joel Griffiths bagged his seventh goal in nine matches. But Queensland hit back with goals to Matt McKay and Charlie Miller to lead at halftime, which is the way the match ended.
Boca Juniors 1 – San Lorenzo 0 (Argentinean Apertura, November 2, 2008) Juan Roman Riquleme’s free-kick missed everyone to nestle in the far corner.
