Monday night football: Hamburg sneak past Fortuna on penalties; Helsingborg go top in Sweden

Fortuna Dusseldorf 3 – Hamburg 3* (Pens. 1-4) (DFB Pokal, August 3, 2009) A trademark late surge into the box allowed Mladen Petric to get on a 4th minute left wing cross to put Hamburg ahead. The lead didn’t last long as Oliver Fink turned home a low cross at the near post. Fortuna then moved ahead as Jerome Boateng deflected the ball into his own net. Piotr Trochowski equalised for the Bundesliga outfit ten minutes into the second half, and with the game moving into extra time Trochowski claimed his second from the penalty spot. The game had a final twist as with just three seconds left on the clock Andreas Lambertz equalised for the host. Hamburg won the penalties thanks to two saves from keeper Frank Rost.


GAIS 0 – Trelleborg 1 (Allsvenskan, August 3, 2009) After GAIS had dominated the game, Peter Abelsson popped up with a 64th minute header from a set piece to hand Trelleborg victory. Mattias Lindstrom saw red for hosts late on after the striker attempted to punch the ball in the net.

Gefle 2 – Djurgarden 0 (Allsvenskan, August 3, 2009) Early goals from Jonas Lantto and Daniel Westlin handed Gefle the points.

Hammarby 1 – Helsingborg 2 (Allsvenskan, August 3, 2009) Helsingborg climbed to the top ofleague thanks to goals from Rene Makondele and Erik Sundin, with Andreas Dahl netting for fourth-bottom Hammarby.

Orebro 2 – Orgryte 2 (Allsvenskan, August 3, 2009) Alvaro Dos Santos and Marcus Allback scored for Orgryte inside the first five minutes of the second half after an own goal after 15 minutes from David Leinar had gifted Orebro the lead. But with five minutes remaining Orgryte’s Dennis Jonsson scored his team’s second own goal of the day to thwart their victory hopes.
