Monday Night Football: Chris Morgan’s own goal sends Newcastle to Championship summit

Sheffield United 0 – Newcastle 1 (Championship, November 2, 2009) Chris Morgan inadvertently deflected Ryan Taylor’s low 25-yard shot past stranded Blades goalkeeper Ian Bennett in the 54th minute to hand manager Chris Hughton a telling win in his first game since being given the job on a permanent basis. Newcastle go top of the Championship.

Banfield 2 – Estudiantes 1 (Apertura, November 2, 2009) Uruguayan Santiago Silva, put the home side ahead with his 11th goal in the 11th minute. Estudiantes were handicapped from the 13th minute by the dismissal of winger Enzo Perez for swearing at the referee. Sebastien Veron equalised in the 37th minute with a belter from 20-yards out but Walter Erviti struck the winner in the 68th with a curling left-footed shot into the top far corner.

Tigre 1 – Newells Old Boys 2 (Apertura, November 2, 2009) Newell’s Uruguayan striker Joaquin Boghossian made up for an own goal by heading the winner five minutes from time at Tigre. He headed a cross into his own net in the 68th, just two minutes after midfielder Mauro Formica had given Newell’s the lead.
