Martins at the double to lift Newcastle off the bottom

The Toon played with a lot more confidence following the goal and Martins grabbed his second with eight minutes to go after good work by Gutierrez.

Birmingham 0 – Coventry 1 (Championship, November 3, 2008) Clinton Morrison returned to his old club and scored the only goal of the game just after the break with a close range header.

Ascoli 1 – Rimini 1 (Serie B, November 3, 2008) Rimini found the lead in the first half when Ricchiuti’s chipped pass was expertly volleyed past former Manchester United keeper Massimo Taibi by Cipriani. But just as it seemed that the visitors would take the points, Cioffi’s last minute tap in rescued Ascoli a point.

Strasbourg 1 – Lens 1 (Ligue 1, November 3, 2008) Shereni’s header put Strasbourg ahead, only for the former Liverpool and Portsmouth player, Gregory Vignal, to level for Lens with a header from a free-kick.

Lokomotiv Moscow 0 – Dynamo Moscow 1 (Russian Premier Liga, November 3, 2008) Alexander Kokorin, a 17-year-old striker, playing just his fourth game, scored the winner for Dynamo in the 51st minute.

Brondby 4 – AC Horsens 3 (Superligaen, November 3, 2008) The away side stormed into a two-goal lead, with their first from Allan Sogaard a terrific strike. Brondby scored two before Horsens goalkeeper Jochumsen was sent-off and the home side won the seven goal thriller and moved joint top with Odense.
