Alonso puts Chelsea in front
It was Arsenal who had the better of the early proceedings. The Gunners looked alert and hungry. They were closing down Chelsea as soon as they picked up possession. Yet it was the home side who took the lead.
A smart passing move caught the Gunners out of shape at the back. A cross from the right found the head of Diego Costa and it looked the forward had added to his Premier League tally. But the ball crashed against the bar sending the ball straight up into the air, there for the taking. As Hector Bellerin waited for it to fall, Petr Cech was standing back up.
But the goalkeeper couldn’t recover his position in time to stop a thundering Marcos Alonso rebound. It must be said Alonso himself was more thundering than the effort. He flew into Bellerin in a reckless manner.
Alonso’s commitment to winning that header meant that he wasn’t very concerned with how he was attacking the ball. Apparently inadvertently, he caught Bellerin with his forearm and appeared to momentarily knock the Spaniard out.
Bellerin had to be substituted with suspected concussion and Gabriel came on to replace him.
