Keane’s brace keeps Liverpool top; Nasri at the double as Arsenal see off United; Belhadj brightens up the Stadium of Light; Trotters tame the Tigers; West Ham throw away the points against Everton

Liverpool 3 – West Brom 0 (Premier League, November 8, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Gerrard played in Yossi Benayoun in a goal-scoring position, but Scott Carson came to the Baggies rescue although the ball hit Jonas Olsson’s arm on the rebound. In the 34th minute Liverpool scored, a wonderful pass from Steven Gerrard played in Robbie Keane in the inside left position, and the Irishman broke his Premier League duck for the Reds with a class finish past Carson. And Keane was quick to chalk up his second, Aurelio released the forward from a swift counter-attack, and after beating Carson in no-mans land Keane tucked in number two. In injury time Liverpool got the third, Mascherano poked the ball to Kuyt, who slipped Arbeloa and the full-back cuts inside from the right and curls a beauty into the top-left corner.

Arsenal 2 – Manchester United 1 (Premier League, November 8, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Wayne Rooney missed a great chance in the opening stages as Manchester United appeared to have the upper hand at the Emirates, but the Gunners picked up their game after 20 minutes with Samir Nasri hitting a half-volley that deflected off Gary Neville, giving van der Sar no chance. Immediately after the restart the Gunners doubled their lead when Samir Nasri produced another fine finish after Fabregas had played him in. Brazilian right back Rafael pulled one back for United in the final minute with a great left-footed volley, but United couldn’t find an equaliser in six minutes of injury-time. Sunderland 1 – Portsmouth 2 (Premier League, November 8, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) In the third minute at the Stadium of Light, Djibril Cisse held off Sol Campbell and finished well from a brilliant through ball by Andy Reid. Portsmouth levelled in breathtaking fashion after the break, the ball fell to Nadir Belhadj who fired off a howitzer that flew into the net. Tony Adams then got the break he was looking for since taking over at Pompey, Glen Johnson was brought down by El Hadji Diouf in the box and Jermain Defoe crashed in the penalty for the three points.

Hull 0 – Bolton 1 (Premier League, November 8, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Bolton found a scrappy opener at Hull, a corner fell to Matty Taylor in the box and the full back improvised to steer a left-footed shot in the near post.

West Ham 1 – Everton 3 (Premier League, November 8, 2008) After a quiet opening half, 20-year-old Jack Collison announced himself to the Premier League collecting a deft flick from Freddy Sears and curling home a beauty past Tim Howard. The Hammers held the lead into the final ten minutes, but then three goals in five minutes turned the match on its head. Joleon Lescott met Saha’s cross for the equaliser, an Anichebe cross was converted by Louis Saha for the second, and Faubert lost possession too easily with Saha slamming in the third from 25-yards.

Wigan 0 – Stoke 0 (Premier League, November 8, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Wigan’s dismal form at the JJB continues, the Latics have the worst home record in the league and both teams’ fragile confidence was exposed in an encounter low on quality.


Celtic 2 – Motherwell 0 (SPL, November 8, 2008) Veteran Paul Hartley fired home a half-volley on the stroke of halftime to put Celtic ahead against Motherwell. Scott McDonald found the bottom corner in the 72nd minute to double the advantage.


Barcelona 6 – Valladolid 0 (La Liga, November 8, 2008) Samuel Eto’o matched Real Madrid’s Higuain by scoring four goals for Barca in another goal-filled sensational attacking performance at the Nou Camp. Eto’o scored on 12, 30, 43 and 44. Eidur Gudjhonsen and Thierry Henry added goals in the second half.

Real Madrid 4 – Malaga 3 (La Liga, November 8, 2008) Eliseu silenced the Bernabeu after five minutes with a stunning solo run down the right hand side, making his way through on goal and eventually turning the ball home after a shot was parried. Three minutes later Higuain equalised after the keeper saved Guti’s shot. But Malaga stunned the hosts for the second time when Nabil Baha steered home a cross. But back came Real, and Higuain drew Madrid level from the penalty spot from a Malaga handball (was it in the box?). A minute before half-time Ramos was sent off and that led to an incredible final twenty minutes. Malaga took the lead for the third time from a penalty by Apono. Only for Higuain to hit back straight away with an equaliser with a fine right footed strike. Then on 78 minutes Higuain grabbed his and Madrid’s fourth, slotting home after his penalty had been saved, as Los Blancos went into the lead for the first time in the game.

Levante 2 – Tenerife 1 (Segunda Division, November 8, 2008)


Bologna 1 – AS Roma 1 (Serie A, November 8, 2008) In Sinisa Mihajlovic’s first game in charge, Bologna rescued a point through a last minute og from Cicinho after Totti had put Roma in front.

Torino 1 – Palermo 0 (Serie A, November 8, 2008) Palermo lost Nocerino for elbowing Dzemaili in the face in the 83rd minute and Torino capitalised on their numerical advantage when Juergen Saumel connected with a volley from beyond the area in the 89th minute for his first Serie A goal since joining Torino from Sturm Graz.

Rimini 0 – Triestina 2 (Serie B, November 8, 2008) The game had barely begun when Della Rocca’s header opened the scoring, Testini completing the win with a solo effort.

Ancona 0 – Avellino 1 (Serie B, November 8, 2008) The key moment came when Camillucci was sent off, as Avellino poured forward and snatched victory through Pellicori. De Martino’s dismissal for the visitors was too late to change the outcome.

Albinoleffe 1 – Mantova 2 (Serie B, November 8, 2008) Billy Costacurta continues to go from strength to strength, as he saw his Mantova side come from behind to win. Carobbio had seemingly put the hosts in control with a left-foot strike, but Costacurta brought on Corona who equalised from distance, before a diving header from Godeas secured the victory.

Vicenza 0 – Livorno 1 (Serie B, November 8, 2008) Livorno continued the away wins in Serie B, Diamanti bagging a 78th minute winner.

Pisa 1 – Ascoli 1 (Serie B, November 8, 2008) Soncin put the visitors ahead straight after the restart. Degano saw his penalty saved by Taibi but Pisa eventually levelled through Viviani.

Hamburg 2 – Borussia Dortmund 1 (Bundesliga, November 8, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Mladen Petric headed Hamburg into the lead at home to Dortmund. Ivica Olic doubled the lead for Martin Jol’s men. But Dortmund got a foothold in the game immediately after the break when Tamaz Hajnal tapped in after Silva’s header was parried.

Karlsruhe 3 – Bayer Leverkusen 3 (Bundesliga, November 8, 2008) Bayer raced into a three goal lead. Patrick Helmes scored inside the opening 60 seconds, Stefan Kiessling then added a second 15 minutes later and Michal Kadlec added a third in the 24th minute. Antonio da Silva pulled one back for the home side eight minutes before halftime and Tim Sebastian headed in to set up a nervous final half hour. Alexander Iashvili then secured a stunning Karlsruhe comeback with 13 minutes remaining.

Bochum 0 – Werder Bremen 0 (Bundesliga, November 8, 2008) Werder Bremen continued to struggle with just one victory in six games after a scoreless draw with Bochum, Bremen having Mesut Ozil sent off with six minutes left.

Bordeaux 2 – Auxerre 0 (Ligue 1, November 8, 2008) Bordeaux had to wait until 20 minutes from time to break down visitors Auxerre with goals from strikers Fernando Cavenaghi and a Marouane Chamakh header from Yoann Gourcuff’s cross.

Monaco 0 – Lyon 1 (Ligue 1, November 8, 2008) Fred converted Kim Kallstrom’s 55th minute cross to earn table-toppers Lyon a win away to mid-table Monaco.

Grenoble 0 – Marseille 3 (Ligue 1, November 8, 2008) Hatem Ben Arfa opening the scoring after just four minutes. Bakari Kone turned home Laurent Bonnart’s cross for the second on 34 minutes before Cheyrou drilled home the third goal eight minutes from time. Marseille stay second.

Caen 0 – Le Havre 1 (Ligue 1, November 8, 2008) Nicolas Dieuze headed home from close range on 83 minutes to secure Le Havre an important win.

Lorient 0 – Nice 1 (Ligue 1, November 8, 2008) Olivier Echouafni grabbed the only goal of the game on 24 minutes.

Sochaux 2 – Le Mans 1 (Ligue 1, November 8, 2008) Bottom club Sochaux secured a first win of the season at the 13th attempt, the hosts took a 30th minute lead through Francileudo dos Santos. Paulo Andre levelled for Le Mans at the end of the first half, but Ryad Boudebouz’s 69th minute goal earned Sochaux a precious three points.

Nantes 1 – Toulouse 1 (Ligue 1, November 8, 2008) Guillaume Moullec opened the scoring after four minutes, but they were pegged back by Andre-Pierre Gignac 14 minutes later.


NEC 1 – PSV 0 (Eredivisie, November 8, 2008) Peter Wisgerhof grabbed the only goal of the game, converting a scrappy corner after 12 minutes, as NEC heaped further misery on lowly PSV.
