Serie A: Inter Milan move seven clear at top; Sampdoria stumble; Fiorentina & Roma pick up home wins


Palermo 0 – Genoa 0 (Serie A, November 1, 2009)

Livorno 0 – Inter Milan 2 (Serie A, November 1, 2009) After a goalless first half in Livorno, Mourinho’s men needed just four minutes of the second half before Diego Milito cracked in the visitors’ opener. With ten minutes to go a marauding run from Maicon saw Inter go 2-up – the goal lifting Mourinho out of his seat to applaud.

Fiorentina 3 – Catania 1 (Serie A, November 1, 2009) Marco Marchionni picked up an overhit cross from Vargas just outside Catania’s box and the winger cut inside and flash home a beauty to give Fiorentina a 5th minute lead. The Viola had Dario Dainelli sent off just before the interval, and minutes after the restart Catania were level as Giuseppe Mascara rifled an unstoppable half-volley into the far top corner from 25-yards out. The Sicilians then had Ciro Capuano dismissed to even out the numbers, and the Viola quickly regained their advantage as Marco Marchionni scored his second of the game. Alberto Gilardino added a third at the death following yet another left wing cross from the excellent Vargas.

Roma 2 – Bologna 1 (Serie A, November 1, 2009) Roma bossed the opening exchanges of their match with Bologna, but were caught out with a sucker-punch as Martin Adailton steered the visitors into a 32nd minute lead. The Giallorossi were soon level through Mirko Vucinic’s equaliser although the goal should have been ruled out for Perotta’s handball in the build-up. Roma took the lead early in the second half as Simone Perrotta followed up a shot to poke home the rebound.

Cagliari 3 – Atalanta 0 (Serie A, November 1, 2009) Nene broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute when he headed home Andrea Cossu’s cross from the centre of the Atalanta penalty box. Three minutes later the duo combined again and this time Nene latched onto a Cossu cross to make it 2-0 to Cagliari. The hosts wrapped up all three points just before halftime when Alessandro Matri converted a penalty.

Chievo 1 – Udinese 1 (Serie A, November 1, 2009) Udinese went ahead in the 27th minute when Antonio Floro Flores shot home from an acute angle on the left. Chievo restored parity in the 70th minute when Mario Yepes headed home a Michele Marcolini cross.

Siena 1 – Lazio 1 (Serie A, November 1, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) The Biancocelesti took an early lead when Stefano Mauri headed home a great cross to leave Gianluca Curci with little chance between the sticks. After sustaining some further pressure, the Robur than found a way back when Massimo Maccarone produced an individual moment of magic to fire home at the far post.

Sampdoria 0 – Bari 0 (Serie A, November 1, 2009) Bari wasted their best chance one minute from stoppage time when Barretto sent a penalty high and wide after Meggiorini was downed in the box by the keeper. Samp striker Antonio Cassano fumed to the post match press after the match, threatening to leave the club after seemingly have been angered by whistles from the supporters.
