Coppa Italia: Del Piero double leads Juve past Napoli; Flamini’s cracker lifts Milan over Novara; Catania win away at 9-man Genoa

Juventus 3 – Napoli 0 (Coppa Italia, January 13, 2010) After a Juve attack in the 24th minute against Napoli, the ball fell Diego on the edge of the box and the schemer fired a ball into the turf the sped off into the net. The Bianconeri sealed their passage to the next round when talisman Alessandro Del Piero netted his first goal of the season 13 minutes from time, and Del Piero put the game out of sight with a penalty five minutes later.

AC Milan 2 – Novara 1 (Coppa Italia, January 13, 2010) (Longer highlights here.) Pippo Inzaghi showed that he still hasn’t lost any of his instinctive predatory skills to fire the Rossoneri ahead after 12 minutes, the legendary striker controlled a long ball on his chest exquisitely, turned his defender inside-out, before whipping a deflected shot into the far corner. The Italian minnows showed they were no pushovers though scoring an equally fine goal through striker Pablo Andres Gonzalez, the number nine skinning Kaladze before firing a shot inside the far netting. Milan had to wait until the final ten minutes to claim the winner, Mathieu Flamini cracking home a tremendous 25-yard rocket that was worthy of winning any football match.

Genoa 1 – Catania 2 (Coppa Italia, January 13, 2010) Catania raced into a 2-lead after just eight minutes at Genoa, Gianvito Plasmati got behind the home backline after four minutes to slot in the opener and soon after the striker was again freed beyond the home defence and Plasmati bagged his second. A fabulous 25-yard rocket from Marco Rossi brought the Rossoblu back in the match after the break before the hosts had Papastathopoulos and Rossi sent off to leave them down with just nine men.
