Villa hits a hat-trick as Spain spank Azerbaijan; Edin Dzeko scores for Bosnia

Azerbaijan 0 – Spain 6 (International Friendly, June 9, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) David Villa stole the headlines with a first half hat-trick. Arbeloa galloped down the right and Villa smashed the defender’s low cross high into net from the edge of the box for the opener, Villa crashed home a spectacular left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area four minutes later, and the third arrived from the spot after Cesc won a penalty. Albert Riera, substitute Dani Guiza and Fernando Torres struck in the second half to complete the rout.

Bosnia 2 – Oman 1 (International Friendly, June 9, 2009) Continuing where he left off in the Bundesliga, Edin Dzeko opened the scoring for Bosnia after entertaining a mazy run into the box. Ahmed Hadid brought Oman level just after the half hour mark, but a super Sajed Salihovic free-kick five minutes from time earned Bosnia the win.

Iraq 1 – Poland 1 (International Friendly, June 9, 2009) Mahdi Kareem stole in unmarked at the back post to open the scoring for the Asian champions. Poland equalised when Roger Guerreiro’s fierce shot was too hot for the Iraqi keeper to handle.

Denmark 0 – Italy 4 (U21 International Friendly, June 9, 2009) Italy took the lead after only 13 minutes courtesy of a precise free-kick by Mario Balotelli. Nine minutes later, Super Mario saw his shot saved by the home keeper only for Robert Acquafresca to convert the rebound. After coming on as a sub at th ebreak, it took Daniele Dessena just two minutes to score with a cute chip after a brilliant defence-splitting pass by Giovinco. Andrea Ranocchia selead the win with a fourth at the death.
