Meaningless win for Mali as they go out with Malawi; Draw sees Angola & Algeria progrees

Mali 3 – Malawi 1 (African Cup of Nations, January 18, 2010) Two outstanding Malian goals in the opening three minutes left Malawi in a world of pain in their attempts to qualify the group. A keeping howler from Malawi’s Sanudi saw the goalie scuff a clearance to Freddie Kanoute who volleyed home from 35-yards. That goal was then bettered by Seydou Kieta who thumped an unbelievable free-kick from distance past Sanudi to double the lead. Russel Mwafulirwa reduced the deficit for Malawi just before the hour, bur Mali ran out comfortable, but eventually unsuccessful, winners when Mamadou Bagayoko netted a third five minutes from time.

Angola 0 – Algeria 0 (African Cup of Nations, January 18, 2010) The draw suited both teams perfectly, with Angola going through as Group A winners on five points and Algeria as runners-up on four points.
