Home Nations: England draw in Holland with Defoe double; Everton’s Cahill sinks Ireland; Wales lose in Montenegro; Northern Ireland held by Israel

Holland 2 – England 2 (International Friendly, August 12, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) The match started with a minute applause for Sir Bobby Robson and then the “Jackson Four” sang the God Save The Queen. When the football got underway a poor Rio Ferdinand backpass was intercepted by Dirk Kuyt and, after evading the Robert Green in goal the Liverpool striker fired a ball past Terry on the line. After 37 minutes England shot themselves in the foot again, Barry gave the ball away to Robben, Green saved and Rafael van der Vaart scored on the rebound. (First half highlights here.) England rallied at the start of the second half, Lampard released Jermain Defoe who scored with a classy left-footed finish in the near post. The Three Lions equalised 15 minutes from time when Jermain Defoe tucked home a James Milner cross from the left.

Republic of Ireland 0 – Australia 3 (International Friendly, August 12, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Tim Cahill once again proved his goal scoring ability with two goals (first and second) and a late third from David Carney was a cracker.

Montenegro 2 – Wales 1 (International Friendly, August 12, 2009) Stevan Jovetic gave the home side the lead from the penalty spot, Radomir Dalovic doubled the score before Sam Vokes pulled one back.

Northern Ireland 1 – Israel 1 (International Friendly, August 12, 2009) Grant McCann’s fine free-kick put the home side into the lead, Elyaniv Barda equalised for Israel.
