Treasured Bundesliga institution Hamburg SV didn’t go under – to the second division, that is – after a dramatic day of relegation play-off action. But it was close.
Having drawn the home leg against Karlsruhe 1-1, Hamburg were behind on away goals and looked reasonably doomed when they fell behind in the second clash.
But Marcelo Diaz rescued their proud record at the death with a superb free kick. Not a bad time to score his first goal for the club.
Nicolai Muller managed to secure victory in extra-time with a winner five minutes before an anticipated penalty shoot-out.
There was still spot-kick action, though, as Karlsruhe were awarded a penalty in the last minute of extra-time, only for Rene Adler to save it, the big hero.
This is the second year in a row that Hamburg have narrowly won the relegation play-off.
If they are to retain their record then they cannot be back for a third consecutive year or surely their luck will run out.
