Goals on Sunday: New York Red Bulls beat Juventus; LA Galaxy sink Boca; Croatia down Wales

New York Red Bulls 3 – Juventus 1 (International club friendly, May 23, 2010) Juventus’ continued their shocking form to lose in NY despite the presence of Grosso, Del Piero and Trezeguet. Jeremy Hall tapped in the opener on 50 minutes after Garcia had smacked the bar. Connor Chinn and Juan Pablo Angel added further goals before Amauri added some gloss to the scoreline.

LA Galaxy 1 – Boca Juniors 0 (International club friendly, May 23, 2010) Tristan Bowen scored an 83rd minute winner to earn the Galaxy a morale boosting win.


Croatia 2 – Wales 0 (International friendly, May 23, 2010) On the stroke of half time Ivan Rakitic scored a classy opener for Croatia, finishing with a cracking effort from the edge of the box. Drago Gabric claimed the second with a cool finish after good build-up play.


Kansas City Wizards 0 – Columbus Crew 1 (MLS, May 23, 2010) Emilio Renteria scored a 64th minute header from a corner kick to give the visiting Columbus Crew a 1-0 victory and end the Kansas City Wizards’ perfect home record this season.


Corinthians 1 – Fluminense 0 (Campeonato Brasileiro, May 23, 2010) Corinthians made it three wins in a row with a free kick by defender Chicao in the 12th minute.

Flamengo 3 – Gremio Prudente 1 (Campeonato Brasileiro, May 23, 2010) Striker Vagner Love converted two penalties as champions Flamengo ended a run of two draws with a 3-1 win over Gremio Prudente at the Maracana.

Internacional 0 – Sao Paulo 2 (Campeonato Brasileiro, May 23, 2010) Sao Paulo profited from a mistake by Inter’s keeper Abbondanzieri to take the lead in the 38th minute, Hernanes scoring with a low, long-range shot. Fernandao doubled Sao Paulo’s lead after the break following a one-two between Hernanes and striker Dagoberto on the left.

Atletico Mineiro 3 – Atletico Paranaense 1 (Campeonato Brasileiro, May 23, 2010) Atletico Mineiro are sixth following a 3-1 win over struggling Atletico Paranaense. Muriqui, Diego Tardelli and Ricardinho with the hosts’ goals which came in a 16-minute burst in the second half with Mineiro getting a late consolation.

Guarani 2 – Cruzeiro 2 (Campeonato Brasileiro, May 23, 2010) Cruzeiro overcame a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 at Guarani. The hosts went ahead through two first-half Roger goals before Gil and Guerron secured a point for the visitors.

Ceara 1 – Vitoria 0 (Campeonato Brasileiro, May 23, 2010) Ceara are fifth following a 1-0 win over Vitoria after a last-minute goal by Washington Luiz.

Avai 2 – Vasco 0 (Campeonato Brasileiro, May 23, 2010) Avai went ahead after 28 minutes through Roberto with Robinho sealing the win in the last minute and Avai now head four teams on seven points.


Rosario Central 0 – All Boys 3 (Agg. 1-4) (Argentina relegation play-offs, May 23, 2010) All Boys could not have wished for a better start as Marcelo Vieytes put them in front less than ten minutes into the second leg. A further goal from Mariano Campodonico meant they held a 2-0 advantage at the interval. The game was sown up 25 minutes from time when Cristian Vella grabbed All Boys third of the match as the minnows returned to the top flight for the first time in 30 years.

Gimnasia La Plata 3 – Atletico Rafaela 1 (Agg. 3-2) (Argentina relegation play-offs, May 23, 2010) A brace of first half goals from Gimnasia’s striker Marco Perez (the second a brilliant free-kick) put the team from La Plata in charge at the interval, although Oscar Carniello did manage to get one for Atletico Rafaela in the first period. As Rafaela pressed for another goal Gimnasia’s Alvaro Ormeno was given all the room he needed to round the goalkeeper and secure his side’s place in Argentina’s top flight.


Toluca 0* – Santos 0 (Agg. 2-2) (Pens. 4-3) (Mexican Clausura final second-leg May 23, 2010) Toluca clinched the Mexican Clausura championship by beating Santos in a sudden-death penalty shootout. Alfredo Talavera was the hero saving Fernando Arce’s penalty to win the title for Toluca after both Matias Vuoso and Carlos Morales both dragged their penalties wide to miss the chance to win the title for Santos.


Denmark 1 – Chile 1 (U20 Toulon Tournament, May 23, 2010) Jensen had put Denmark in front with a fine chip. Eugenio Mena equalised for Chile with a strike through the keeper’s legs after a flowing move.
