Stuttgart back in Bundesliga title running after Schalke win; Werder smack Frankfurt for five

Schalke 1 – Stuttgart 2 (Bundesliga, May 13, 2009) Stuttgart, fresh-faced after their drumming of Wolfsburg, blazed into the lead at Schalke with a sublime strike from Cacau after the quarter hour. Five minutes before the break Ivan Rakitic cracked in a fine free-kick to equalise. A woeful attempt by Manuel Neuer to push away a Hitzlsperger shot allowed Ciprian Marica to easily slot in Stuttgart’s second.

Hamburg 3 – Bochum 1 (Bundesliga, May 13, 2009) A bullet from Jose Guerrero fired Hamburg ahead against Bochum. Hamburg’s pocket-dynamo Croat striker Ivica Olic then leaped high to head home a corner 33 minutes in. Ivica Olic claimed his brace with a typically tenacious goal, the striker refusing to give up on a lost cause before thrashing in the third. Paul Freier put Bochum on the scoring-map with 20 minutes remaining.

Arminia Bielefeld 0 – Hoffenheim 2 (Bundesliga, May 13, 2009) A poor mistake from Arminia Bielefeld centre-back Markus Bollmann, caught out trying to chest-trap the ball, allowed Wellington to nip in and put Hoffenhem ahead. Sejad Salihovic sealed the win from the spot after Demba Ba appeared to take a dive in the box.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0 – Werder Bremen 5 (Bundesliga, May 13, 2009) The goalless encounter between Frankfurt and Werder turned in the 50th minute after Patrick Ochs was sent off for a foul in the box and Torsten Frings made no mistake from the spot. Werder’s second was quick in coming, Torsten Frings slotting in number two after Bremen had teased the home defence keeping possession in their box. Frankfurt then fell to pieces, Alexandros Tziolis headed in a third and Claudio Pizarro added number four two minutes later. A belting free-kick from Hugo Almeida put the icing on the cake for Bremen.

Energie Cottbus 0 – Moenchengladbach 1 (Bundesliga, May 13, 2009) For the second game running Gladbach saved their bacon in injury time, Dante rising high to head in a corner in the 91st minute.
