Bundesliga: Stuttgart down Wolves, Leverkusen regain top-spot; Hamburg win

Stuttgart 3 – Wolfsburg 1 (Bundesliga, January 16, 2010) Roberto Hilbert capitalised at the back post to put Stuttgart in front at home to Wolfsburg. Pavel Pogrebnyak doubled the lead on 57 from close range only for Edin Dzeko to reduce the arrears on 65 with a cracking shot into the corner. Timo Gebhart clinched the win with three minutes to go.

Bayer Leverkusen 4 – Mainz 2 (Bundesliga, January 16, 2010) Winter Champions Leverkusen suffered a surprise start against Mainz when the visitors took an 8th minute lead through Tim Hoogland. The hosts were quick to reply, Michal Kadlec brought Bayer level before Tranquillo Barnetta put Bayer in front in the 19th minute. The brilliant Toni Kroos then continued were he left off in 2009 by adding a third on the half hour. Mainz roared back into the game with over 20 minutes remaining when Niko Bungert cut the deficit to one, but Eren Derdiyok sealed bayer win with a fourth at the death.

Hamburg 2 – Freiburg 0 (Bundesliga, January 16, 2010) Marcell Jansen fired Hamburg into a 7th minute lead over Freiburg, Mladen Petric doubled the hosts lead early in the second half.

Monchengladbach 1 – Bochum 2 (Bundesliga, January 16, 2010) Stanislav Sestak put Bochum into a 12th minute lead at Gladbach, and Bochum continued to defy their lowly position in the league when Zlatko Dedic bagged a second ten minutes from the break. Fabian Backer’s late goal proved mere consolation for the hosts.

Hannover 0 – Hertha Berlin 3 (Bundesliga, January 16, 2010) Lukasz Piszczek and Raffael netted twice in the 30th and 33rd minutes to give Hertha an unlikely 2-nil away lead at Hannover at the break. A late Theofanis Gekas penalty wrapped up a fine away win for the Berliners.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1 – Werder Bremen 0 (Bundesliga, January 16, 2010) Werder fell behind just before the hour at Frankfurt, Marco Russ putting the hosts in the ascendancy.
