Bundesliga: Leverkusen top; Bayern draw blank; Dzeko scores in Wolfsburg draw; 5-high Hannover


Bayern Munich 0 – FC Cologne 0 (Bundesliga, October 3, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) For the third match running, Van Gaal made the Bundesliga’s most expensive signing Mario Gomez start on the bench, although he brought him on at halftime. A frustrating afternoon for Bayern against unambitious opponents saw Bastian Schweinsteiger twice head against the crossbar in the first half.

Bochum 1 – Wolfsburg 1 (Bundesliga, October 3, 2009) 15 minutes from time Edin Dzeko struck his second header of the week as Wolfsburg came from behind following Vahid Hashemian’s 55th minute opener.

Bayer Leverkusen 4 – Nurnberg 0 (Bundesliga, October 3, 2009) Toni Kroos got the party started with a sublime 20-yard free-kick after just two minutes, and further goals from Simon Rolfes, Eren Derdiyok and a second half Stefan Kiessling header sealed Bayer’s easy win.

Mainz 2 – Hoffenheim 1 (Bundesliga, October 3, 2009) A stunning first time shot from Andreas Ivanschitz got Mainz off and running six minutes in, Aristide Bance’s clever free-kick extended the hosts’ lead while Andreas Ibertsberger’s late goal was a mere consolation for the Village Team.

Hannover 5 – Freiburg 2 (Bundesliga, October 3, 2009) Goals from Sofien Chahed, Arnold Jan Bruggink and Karim Haggui put Hannover firmly in control at the break, although Ivica Banovic had got Freiburg on the board. In a frantic finish Julian Schuster pulled the visitors back to 3-2 with eight minutes remaining before Didier Ya Konan and Sergio Pinto sealed Hannover’s victory.

Monchengladbach 0 – Borussia Dortmund 1 (Bundesliga, October 3, 2009) The only goal came in the 38th minute when Tiago set up Lucas Barrios to fire home.
