Bayern beats Bremen to take Bundesliga lead; Hamburg lose at Dortmund; Bochum stun Schalke with late fightback

Borussia Dortmund 1 – Hamburg 0 (Bundesliga, January 23, 2010) A 36th minute goal from Nelson Valdez was enough to take Borussia Dortmund above opponents Hamburg and into fourth place in the Bundesliga.

Werder Bremen 2 – Bayern Munich 3 (Bundesliga, January 23, 2010) (Longer highlights here.) In the big one in Germany on Saturday, Werder opened against Bayern after 10 minutes when Anglo-Kraut Aaron Hunt raced into the box in the inside left channel and rifled a rocket high into Butt’s near post. The Bavarian giants weren’t behind for long as Thomas Muller notched yet another goal in his excellent season with a calm sidefooted finish after a controlled Munich attack. In the 35th minute Bayern got their noses in front when a terrific cross from Lahm was toe-poked home by Ivica Olic. Bremen were back on an even-keel with 15 minutes remaining when Hugo Almeida struck with a fantastic solo effort, but Bayern showed the title credentials by instantly retaking the lead through a seemingly over-hit 35-yard free-kick from Dutch wizard Arjen Robben.

Mainz 1 – Hannover 0 (Bundesliga, January 23, 2010) A fine solo goal from Mainz left-winger Andre Schurrle broke the deadlock after four minutes against Hannover, the number 14 robbing possession in the visitors half, racing goalwards and slipping a low shot into the near post.

Bochum 2 – Schalke 2 (Bundesliga, January 23, 2010) Schalke scored after five minutes at Bochum when Farfan’s centre was turned home by Vicente Sanchez, and Kevin Kuranyi put the hosts 2-up netting a second just before halftime. Bochum staged a fabulous late fightback to claim a point, Iranian striker Vahid Hashemian volleyed home an 82ndd minute to give the hosts hope, and Stanislav Sestak became the hero with an equaliser in injury time.

Nurnberg 1 – Eintracht Frankfurt 1 (Bundesliga, January 23, 2010) Christian Eigler’s 27th minute header from a free-kick put Nurnberg ahead against Frankfurt, but the visitors headed into the break on level terms as Benjamin Kohler equalised five minutes from the interval.
