Everton produce a stirring second-half comeback to thwart Manchester United; Sunderland win the derby for first time since 2000; Fabulous Tigers chew up the Baggies

Everton 1 – Manchester United 1 (Premier League, October 25, 2008) (Longer highlights here, MOTD highlights here.) After dominating the early exchanges, United took the lead just after the twenty minute mark when Darren Fletcher was played in by Giggs and finished well with his left foot. Minutes later Howard saved well from a Ronaldo shot. (First half highlights here.) Everton came out battling in the second half and got their reward just after the hour when Marouane Fellaini rose highest to a Phil Neville cross. Almost immediately Everton could have taken the lead when Yakubu pounced on Ferdinand’s weak back pass but his effort was pushed on to the post by Van der Sar. Wayne Rooney picked up a yellow card for a foul on Arteta and responded by kissing the United badge on his shirt. (Second half highlights here.)

Sunderland 2 – Newcastle 1 (Premier League, October 25, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Djibril Cisse gave Sunderland the lead in the Tyne-Wear derby when he finished at the back post from a mis-hit shot from Malbranque. Ten minutes later Shola Ameobi equalised for his second goal in consecutive games. With just over ten minutes remaining Keiran Richardson sent the Stadium of Light into delirium with a free-kick that gave Shay Given no chance.

West Brom 0 – Hull 3 (Premier League, October 25, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) The Baggies should have been ahead after eight minutes, Myhill saved Valero’s shot only for Jonas Olsson to head the rebound off the underside of the bar. After the break Hull made the hosts pay, Kamil Zayatte wrapped his foot around his marker to volley Marney’s corner past Carson. Soon it was two, Marlon King crossed from the left and Geovanni ran in to stoop home. Marlon King wrapped up the points with a composed finish after a route-one punt down the field. Blackburn 1 – Middlesbrough 1 (Premier League, October 25, 2008) Both sides hit the woodwork early doors, Jeremy Aliadiere crashed a volley against the crossbar from four yards out, while Roque Santa Cruz was unlucky to see his shot strike the inside of the post to stay out. Middlesbrough then suffered from a dire call at Blackburn as the linesman wrongly ruled out Tuncay’s brilliantly executed bicycle-kick for offside. Fifteen minutes from time Afonso Alves scored the opener, out-pacing Ooijer and hammering a shot to fire past Robinson. But Benni McCarthy rose in the third minute of injury-time to head home the equaliser for Rovers. (Both goals can be seen here.)


Leeds 3 – Walsall 0 (League One, October 25, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Leeds broke the deadlock in the 46th minute when Walsall failed to clear Delph’s corner and Becchio forced the ball over the line. Delph doubled the advantage in the 65th minute when Andy Robinson rolled a free-kick to him 25 yards out and his left-foot drive rocketed into the top-left corner. And Delph fired in his second and Leeds’ third after 87 minutes from 25 yards.


Hamilton 1 – Rangers 3 (SPL, October 25, 2008) Brian Easton put the home side in front but Rangers came back with two from Kris Boyd, the first a penalty and the second a header before Nacho Novo scored the third.

Celtic 4 – Hibernian 2 (SPL, October 25, 2008) The Bhoys started confidently enough when goals from McManus and Sheridan put them 2-0 in front. Nish and Fletcher scored in a fine comeback for Hibs but they could not hold on for a point and Loovens and Brown wrapped up a useful win for Celtic.


Barcelona 5 – Almeria 0 (La Liga, October 25, 2008) Barca produced another awesome first-half display. Samuel Eto’o volleyed home the first, Thierry Henry bagged the second and Eto’o tapped home the third and the Cameroonian striker completed his hat-trick in the 24th minute, backheeling in after great work by Messi. Daniel Alves scored the fifth with a long-range free-kick just before the break.

Osasuna 0 – Real Betis 2 (La Liga, October 25, 2008) Betis moved ahead when Aurelio’s free-kick made its way through a porous wall and into the bottom corner. Pavone forced in a scrappy second after the keeper spilled a free-kick late on.

Cordoba 2 – Tenerife 0 (Segunda Division, October 25, 2008)


Juventus 1 – Torino 0 (Serie A, October 25, 2008) After a goalless 45, Amuari put Juventus ahead in the Turin derby with a strong run and finish which squeezed under the keeper. The game marked the second win for Ranieri in a week, staving off the boo-boys calling for the manager’s head.

Siena 1 – Catania 1 (Serie A, October 25, 2008) Calaio put the hosts in front 15 minutes from time with a powerful header but the high-flying Sicilians were quickly level when Mascara converted a penalty after Paolucci was tripped by keeper.

Vicenza 1 – Sassuolo 0 (Serie B, October 25, 2008) The only goal came from Sgrigna ‘s penalty as top-placed Sassuolo fell to a surprise defeat that puts Vicenza in second place.

Mantova 1 – Parma 3 (Serie B, October 25, 2008)

Livorno 2 – Rimini 1 (Serie B, October 25, 2008) Rossini nodded in Diamanti’s cross and Tavano met Bonetto’s assist. Rimini staged a late fight-back through Vantaggiato, while Cipriani hit the bar.

Bari 3 – Grosseto 1 (Serie B, October 25, 2008) Francesco Caputo bagged a hat-trick to end Grosseto’s hopes of topping the table, who got on the scoresheet through Vitiello’s volley.


Bayern Munich 4 – Wolfsburg 2 (Bundesliga, October 25, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) After having signs of an upturn in fortunes in the last round of matches, Bayern returned to their old, losing way by falling 2-down in the space of 2 minutes. Grafite put Wolfsburg ahead from the spot in the 31st minute with Dzeko adding the second, glancing a header past Rensing. But Bayern gave themselves a lifeline just before the interval, Ribery fired home a low drive form the edge of the box. Bayern restored parity early in the second half through van Bommel’s looping header after Klose’s shot was initially saved. The turnaround was completed in the 63rd by Tim Borowski, who drilled home a shot at the back post. Bayern’s superb second half display was capped by Schweinsteiger adding the fourth.

Schalke 0 – Arminia Bielefeld 0 (Bundesliga, October 25, 2008) Schalke could only manage a disappointing goalless draw with Arminia, despite the away side having Jonas Kamper dismissed after an hour.

Energie Cottbus 2 – Eintracht Frankfurt 3 (Bundesliga, October 25, 2008) The hosts looked to be cruising after a Dimitar Rangelov double inside the opening 15 minutes. But Michael Fink pulled a goal back before half-time with a pearler, with Martin Fenin and Nikos Liberopoulos striking in the space of six second half minutes to complete their comeback.

Hannover 1 – Werder Bremen 1 (Bundesliga, October 25, 2008) Christian Schulz gave the hosts the lead after nine minutes and Hugo Almeida equalised in the 41st for Bremen.

Monchengladbach 1 – Karlsruhe 0 (Bundesliga, October 25, 2008) Monchengladbach have moved off the bottom of the table after Patrick Paauwe’s 51st minute goal.


Nice 2 – Bordeaux 2 (Ligue 1, October 25, 2008) Bordeaux went 2-up thanks to a Wendel free-kick and a Cavenaghi penalty only to conspire to throw away the three points in the final seven Mouloungui scored with a header before Remy equalised from the spot in injury time.

Le Havre 2 – Valenciennes 1 (Ligue 1, October 25, 2008) Valenciennes had made the perfect start as they silenced the home crowd with a goal in the opening 60 seconds as Luigi Pieroni fired home. But Jean-Michel Lesage was the Le Havre hero as he fired home either side of the interval to win the game.

Lorient 3 – Nantes 0 (Ligue 1, October 25, 2008) Fabrice Abriel opened the scoring on the half-hour before second-half goals from Jeremy Morel and Kevin Gameiro sealed the win.

Rennes 2 – Le Mans 2 (Ligue 1, October 25, 2008) Gervinho (11) put them ahead but within minutes Jimmy Briand levelled for the home side. Coutadeur then fired home from the penalty spot to put Le Mans ahead at the break, but they could not hang on for the victory as Mickael Pagis fired home with just 12 minutes left.

Lille 2 – Caen 2 (Ligue 1, October 25, 2008) Lille looked on their way to victory as Ludovic Obraniak grabbed a first-half brace. But Caen hit back well as Nicolas Seube and Steve Savidan fired home to gave the away side a point.

Auxerre 0 – Lyon 0 (Ligue 1, October 25, 2008)

AZ Alkmaar 3 – FC Volendam 0 (Eredivisie, October 25, 2008) AZ’s fine run of form continued as they moved up to second. Maaretn Maartens opened the scoring after 15 minutes, but the home side had to wait for a second as Mounir El Hamdaoui pounced on 72 minutes. Maartens added the third just eight minutes from time.

PSV 2 – Roda 3 (Eredivisie, October 25, 2008) Boldiszar Bodor (20) and Andres Oper (54) gave Roda, without an away win all season, a two-goal lead. Balazs Dzsudzsak halved the deficit in the 60th minute, but Bodor grabbed his second six minutes later to make it 3-1. Danko Lazovic grabbed a second for PSV with 11 minutes remaining, but Roda held on for a win which lifts them up to fifth from bottom.


Belenenses 1 – Vitoria Guimaraes 1 (SuperLiga, October 25, 2008) Jose Pedro made up for a 31st-minute own-goal by scoring with a penalty in the 76th.

FC Porto 2 – Leixoes 3 (SuperLiga, October 25, 2008) Bruno China opened for the visitors three minutes in before Druno Braga scored in the 29th to give Leixoes a 2-0 advantage. Lucho Gonzalez scored a 36th minute penalty to start Porto’s rally, and Lisandro Lopez equalised for Porto just after the hour mark, only for Bruno Braga to notch the winner in the 79th minute.
