In the 41st minute Denmark got a lifeline as Jacobsen popped up at the back post to knock a header across goal where Nicklas Bendtner was positioned to nod the ball over the line. Portugal, and Cristiano Ronaldo twice in particular, had chances to bury Denmark after the break, but having failed to do so Nicklas Bendtner slammed home an 80th minute header to square the match up 2-2. The game had a late twist as, after coming off the bench in the 86th minute, Silvestre Varela lashed home a third for Portugal sixty seconds later to save the Seleccao and Ronaldo’s backsides.
